Nothing mystical about this kick. The goal is to train to have such good balance and stability that when you kick someone at close quarters, they don't see it coming and can't react to it. Basically you want to be able to kick without showing any visible change in weight distribution, no 'shoulder-bob' or as little as possible. I'm sure lot's of people know about this already, but the name is pretty cool.

Did Bruce Lee teach you this?

Ronin, your post from the Wong Fei Hung thread made me think of this. The dog story didn't really say what the kick was :)

Actually, what I was told was that the "no shadow" or "shadowless" kick was a kick ( front) that was delievered so fast that, not even a shadow could be seen..

Ok, seriously, I was told it was a front kick, deleivered in conjunction with a fake attack to the face as to distract the attention from the kick.

Another reason I've heard for calling this the 'no-shadow' kick is that back in the day in China(I know), the old gentleman's robes kind of hid the legs in the first place, so if you were fighting in one of those the kick would be even more invisible.

That said, I can't picture many real kungfu guys fighting in long, flowing robes.

Yeah, everyone knows that real kungfu guys fought in mini-skirts.

I am curious, if your body stays still, no hip or shoulder movement, where does the power come from?

Crystal mini-skirts to enhance their chi, yes. Except for some rogue weirdos who fought naked with burning sage leaves sticking out of their butts.

You will not be able to get sufficient power into a kick without putting your body into it. Thus, unless it happens to hit the groin/solar plexus, the shadow kick is officially useless.

I learned a similar kick while learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, they called it the front snapping kick. Basically you threw your hands in their face as you kicked.

spitting chewing tabaco in the eyes works very well also.

It's silly to say something like that when you haven't been 'shadow-kicked' yourself. Obviously you're not going to get enourmous power from a non-moving front kick. In fact, the first time I tried it I had almost no power whatsoever. Train it enough and it will have the power to damage. The power comes from your stance and the kicking leg. And there are better targets than the groin; like the front or side of the knees, the protruding hip bone, the shins, and the solar plexus.

And if you are bare footed, you can use your toe nails and gut the guy before he even knows what is happening.

Simply watch 'Iron Monkey' (not the porno one either, the one with Donnie Yen) and observe his fast forward no-shadow-kick when he beats the incompetent shaolin monk wannabe.

The porno version is better, more kung fu.
