I've started taking hapkido and would appreciate any input as to the effectiveness of that martial art in real-life self-defense.

In most part its okay. Hopefully you have a good instructor. Eventually you might want to branch out and try other martial arts. Hapkido will give you a good start. At least you learn how to fall properly and do joint locks and all of that. I wouldnt recomend you to dso any high kicks in a real fight though. Many hapkido schools do that but its really risky.

HKD is an effective art, even in the street. However, you need to learn how to adapt the situation at hand.

It's good just know what is realistic and what is not.
