So I'm doing the Wingate Combat Sport Instructor's course. My coach told me ahead of time that I would hear a lot of odd stuff and to just keep my mouth shut and learn what I need for the test and move on. For a little more explanation, there are certain topics and things that government insists that we learn, but the course instructors are free to editorialize in the midst of all of that. Also we are not permitted to record the lectures, so, sorry, even for those of you who understand spoken Hebrew, you are going to have to take my word for it.

So this week we are learning physiology of the cardio-respiratory system and how to improve it. In the midst of this the instructor goes off on one of his bat **** crazy rambles and says:

You see all these chokes in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and to a lesser degree in Judo. The reason they work so well in BJJ is because BJJ players are lazy. They just want to lay on the mats and roll around. If you have sufficient cardio-respiratory conditioning you can hold up under a RNC or some other choke like that for 2, 3 even 4 minutes without a problem. This is why you don't see them happening as often in Judo. Judo players have better cardio generally

Now at this point, I was sure that there is no possible way that I either heard him right or understood him right, so since he studied in the US for his degree I ask him to repeat himself in English. He does, and yes that was exactly what he had said. So I raise my hand a second time, and ask if he has sufficient cardio to hold up for 2min under a full RNC? His response:

Yes, of course, that is why I teach classes like this, I know how to properly condition myself and others.

So, with the danger of possibly looking like a pest, I raise my hand a third time. With an exassperated sigh he asks me what I want now. I ask him if he would be willing to demonstrate this magic ability to withstand a properly placed RNC for 2 minutes. I set a timer and told him I will let go no matter what when it goes off.

Are you a BJJ player then?
I answer in the affirmative.

I didn't realize we had any BJJ players in this course cycle
I shrug. He spends next 30 seconds in awkward silence staring at his watch.

We've been going for nearly 2hrs, I want to make one more quick point and then go to break, so no we won't be able to do that today, I don't want to waste the classes time.
His one more quick point went on for another 45min. Then on break I had a bunch of the KM guys coming up to me saying, "So you do BJJ? You know that stuff doesn't work right?"
Six more weeks until we get to the practical part. Then we'll see what does and doesn't work.

Well the whole Wingate thing is run by Krav people. They aren't allowed to touch Olympic Sports. I considered briefly just bypassing Wingate and getting certified as a wrestling coach, then I found out why there are only 10 certified wrestling coaches and 12 clubs in the entire country. They aren't keen on spreading wrestling for some reason. So yeah I'm stuck with this. What fun.

Please don't do anything to give them an excuse to kick you out before.

Sounds like you need to do a little one-on-one rolling with some guys.

you know I've got a weak recollection of someone somewhere suggesting the all you needed to do when being strangled ways to relax because the cerebral artery would supply enough blood to your brain to remain conscious and functional.

I'm pretty sure was here on bullshido.

and for some reason I'm thinking it was a Krav guy that was stating it or maybe it was one of those X Special Forces guys yeah maybe the one who talked about biting people.

He could have been silent about his BJJ training, told the KM guy he had done some Feldenkrais....

As you wind down your competing career and switch to coaching you'll find plenty of stupid and ignorant out there.

That’s pretty much what I always think after about an hour of rolling... “what a nice nap with all these fat lazy guys.” Because everyone knows laying around in the mat isn’t real training. Real training is eye pokes and wrist locks!

Grappling is harder work than striking. I like to stand and bang because I'm a lazy ************.

Well, speaking of bad RNCs against highly conditioned persons, he is not completely wrong...

In other words: He is probably speaking of other things when mentioning "RNC" because he has no idea of how a good and effective technique works. Looking the same (to the untrained eye), feeling different. Everyone actually rolling knows that phenomenon.

What's the outside on a properly sunk choke, about 10 seconds before lights out?
