They could have picked a better acronym. Suggestions?

Society of Martial Artists Seeking Hegemony (SMASH)
Pugilism And Submission Society (PASS)
Mixed Martial Artists Union (MMAU, the bird is the word)
Dana White Errs Again Martial Artists (aren't we all DWEAMAs at heart?)

This is a really good question.

I don't see anybody picketing, or trying to win over the public over on UFC fighter rights. Actual labor unions in the US are not that strongly supported, so there is even less public support for this.

I don't think it would end up looking like a traditional labor union that appeal to the masses, because this is a truly specialized field of entertainment/sport. A UFC fighter's union will probably look like what the organized talent in Hollywood has built...SAG-AFTRA or similar guild. Or like a sports union.

You can't sell UFC without the support of mass media, TV, PPV...so if the MMAAA decides to go after Zuffa, that's probably where his vulnerability lies, and who they'd have to appeal to. Lots of people do MMA, what makes UFC fighters special is they do it for the camera, making them "screen performers".

"SAG's Mission Statement, the Guild sought to: negotiate and enforce collective bargaining agreements that establish equitable levels of compensation, benefits, and working conditions for its performers; collect compensation for exploitation of recorded performances by its members, and provide protection against unauthorized use of those performances; and preserve and expand work opportunities for its members"

Socialist Collective of All-Round Scrappers (SCARS)?
Pugilists United: No Crappy Hourly/Event Rates (PUNCHERs)?
Fighters Insisting on Scrupulous Treatment (FIST)?

I agree MMA Athletes Association sounds crap

M2A3? That's pretty cool, sounds like the British intelligence unit. Or a droid.

Bjorn Rebney is the head of this thing...

FYI: He's the one one who started Bellator (before Viacom kicked him out and put Coker inplace). Whilst there, he garnered the reputation of fucking fighters over.

I think the SAG/AFTRA analogy is spot on. If they have enough big name fighters in their ranks, and they are willing to strike over deal points then they have a good chance of at least bringing the UFC to the negotiating table.

Plus the new owners are entertainment people so I'm sure that's how they are viewing this.

If the ranks don't grow and/or they're not willing to sit out, nothing will come if it.

In some ways the timing couldn't be worse though. New owners just spent a **** ton of money acquiring the thing (4 billion IIRC). They are probably pretty heavily leveraged and don't want to cut their revenue stream by 42%.

SO do you think this will come down to a titans battle between Viacom and WME-IMG, basically? That's who owns the majority stake in Bellator and Zuffa, respectively, and who would be supporting these "unions".

I half expect Dana White to form his own counter-union, because it would be trivial for him to round up a bunch of big name fighters to form his own "Guild of Thieves."

Anybody see the WWF Raw is War Corporate Ministry uprising in 1999? That's the one where the Undertaker Ministry and Shane McMahon's Corporation formed an evil alliance and were challenged by Mick “Mankind” Foley, The Big Show, Test, and Ken Shamrock, who formed "The Union":

"They each held an oversized two-by-four — more a blue-collar metaphor than a physical threat — and announced the formation of an opposition group called the Union.1 Their beef was not strictly physical; yes, they wanted to beat up the Corporate Ministry, but the Union’s complaint was broader. Since the Corporation had formed, its members had been mistreating their foes and steering opportunities toward cronies. Now, by negotiating a merger with Undertaker’s Ministry, the new faction looked like it could dominate WWF matchmaking for the foreseeable future. The Union’s goal wasn’t just to settle a fight, but also to keep its members’ jobs."

Wrestlers have never successfully organized, because they are classified as "independent contractors", largely because of the monopoly that controls them. MMA fighters may be about to break up that model. They are not scripted actors playing parts. They are fighting and bleeding for people on live TV and deserve to have a lot of say over their employment, in my opinion. Seriously, Emperor White can go to hell.

I would if I were them. From what I've read it seems like they're mostly focusing on getting the UFC to actually pay them first, though

Gotta give it to Rebney, the man is smart. Viacom and UFC both hate him, you'd think he's out of the big league MMA game. Yet here he is (in the proces of) carving out his own place.

Right now, the biggest complaint the fighters have, is that piece of **** UFC Reebok deal. If Bjorn manages to use that to unionize the fighters, hats off to him.

I know there's probably a fuckton more factions that used to be at play. The old forum I had got deleted for vulgarity way back when.

PitFighting has existed for about ten years:

"Leonard Hauser" was just a pseudonym for Dan Severn.
