8/01/2016 3:16pm,
To balance out Aikido Sucks Month, I decided to create a thread dedicated to something cool for a change.

Here, I will post a series of MMA fights in chronological order from the oldest bouts I can find to the modern era. Over the course of August, we will see how the sport we all love and cherish has evolved (And devolved) over the past century or so.

We've got quite a way to go before we even get to UFC 1.

Sheesh.

I love that move the wrestler does around the three quarter mark of the third vid, where he wraps his legs around the boxer's arm and rolls over.

I like how you can really see the roots of professional wrestling when you watch the old catch wrestlers work.

Might fit into this thread? Anyway itīs a montage from boxer vs freestyle wrestler match from Finland 1956 - they say that the rules are that "each fighter is allowed to use the techniques from his own sport" but to me it looks like both are free to use wrestling but only the boxer is permitted to punch

USA has belts.

Japan has trophies.

And Finland has Spongebob-esque caricature posters.

Also, the boxer doesn't really have an option but to wrestle once he's in a clinch.

Tommy Lee's "no rules" World Series of Martial Arts Championships promotion in the 70's was an early attempt to create a full-contact sports venue where fighters could employ essentially any style they practiced. Combatants could strike, utilize takedowns, and earn points by pinning their opponents for five seconds. Pads had to be worn on EVERY surface area a fighter wanted to hit with (So, in addition to gloves, a fighter had to wear foot pads if he wanted to kick and elbow pads if he wanted to throw elbow strikes), and there didn't appear to be any submissions allowed. A bizarre ruleset by today's standards, but clear evidence that fighters desired to compete in an MMA-type venue long before the real sport actually took off in the US.

Here we see kickboxing legend Benny Uriquidez taking on the 80 lbs heavier Dana Goodson.

Bill Wallace either fought or was supposed to fight in that organization. He had a wrestling/Judo background.
