Can't give in to these little bastards. Condolences to the Canadians. Hope they bring them to justice without anymore innocent casualties.

I'm in Ottawa. The confirmed situation at the moment:

- soldier at the war memorial shot dead
- gunman then ran to Parliament Hill, and was shot dead by the Sergeant of Arms
- sounds like there was a second man, but police are exceedingly unwilling to confirm that
- turns out there was a false alarm at the mall

I don't condone the death penalty, but this happening in the heat of the moment has saved us a trial and probably more than a few lives. My respect to the sergeant, he is a hero.

Absolutely...although interrogation might have been useful. Maybe they will catch the possible second person.

Sergeant at Arms was ready, good job by him for sure.

I disagree, I don't think terrorists have to be of sane mind. I don't think any are, actually.

Foreign Minister John Baird told the BBC gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau was "certainly radicalised", but was not on a list of high-risk individuals.

It turns out he WAS a terrorist...made a video expressing his views....he wasn't just some nutcase.

Heard this on CBC on the way back from a judo kata clinic last night.

oh,and LOL at "30/30 Winchester Shotgun"...maybe a .410 ?

We really need to define "terrorist" more closely. I'd say he's a terrorist in the same way that the Unabomber was - disgruntled, anti-social, and alone.

Yeah, it was painful to read some of the reporters, who obviously have no idea what a rifle is versus a shotgun. Apparently it was a 30.30 repeater. Since he was barred from purchasing firearms, and the rifle was of old manufacture, there's some conjecture that he took it from the farm of a relative of his in Quebec.

Yeah, terrorist might need a little narrowing, however, he's going to be painted that way probably no matter what.

I thought the original reports were "rifle"...they do make a Model 94 in .410 bore (shotgun)...

He might also have bought it on the "black market". I assume that criminals can buy firearms in Canada one way or the other.

He also tried to register his car. On CBC it was funny a couple of days ago the commentators were going on and on about "how could he drive across town etc. with no license plate??????" Apparently he stuck a piece of junk mail he pilfered from the trash can of one of the DMV offices that rejected him in the back window and was good to go !

It's got to be a pretty slow day for the cops to examine the temp permit in the window.

Here in SK we don't even have expiry dates on the plates anymore so any old expired plate will do.

Right, I imagine Ottowa and surroundings get a bit more traffic than even Regina or Saskatoon, eh? That's what was so effing funny about the commentators comments. Totally clueless about normal life...

Still, I do like to listen to CBC, beats our NPR all to heck as far as I can tell.
