Seems like a lot of lecturing while sitting in chairs.

Everything is Jason Bourne Cam and sped up. Can't really tell what they are doing. Will have to check it out when I get to my computer.

Looks like a great way to find students. You have people that already lead disciplined lives and are in shape, if crossfit doesn't get in the way it would be a great way to expand your school.

As for the material? Typical looking combatives stuff, probably works fairly well at teaching people to survive an attack in a relatively short amount of time. The problem with these seminars is people go to one and think they're good or dishonest advertising tells them they'll be able to beat big street thugs by the dozens and that self defense is easy.

There are a variety of threads on BS regarding Tony Blauer and the S.P.E.A.R system.

Many posters have vouched for the efficacy of the system, take that for what it's worth. I have never seen it in person, and judging solely from the Crossfit vid, it seems they favor the palm heel strike :)

I though crossfit already made one "unfuckwithable"?!

I think we all know well enough that you can't learn to fight during a one day seminar. But learning some basic escapes and how to throw some strikes isn't a bad thing as long as it is accompanied by the assurance that all it does is maybe give you time and space to run away: not turn you into a fighting bad-ass. If the SPEAR system does this and CrossFit want to add that to their arsenal, whatever. But CrossFit is pretty good at peddling BS, which makes me concerned.

The video made me glad my Judo coach teaches grip fighting and wrestling style clinch work, because I found endless opportunities to dump most of those folks on their asses in the video. But, again, that is me with several years of Judo and them with an afternoon of palm heel strikes and stiff arms to the neck.

I used to have a VHS tape of Blauer's old Panic Attack thang, which was eye-opening at the time - let me get this straight, we're going to put on suitable protective gear, and then fight? And it continues if it goes to the ground? And you might have to fight three guys?

Unlike the vast majority of the other RBSD'ers, he was happy to have his guys duke it out, and wasn't afraid of getting grass-stains/AIDS needles/lava on his jeans. Oh, and he actually had a sense of humour - something that also set him apart from his brethren.

Not sure what happened to him betwixt then and now.
