Started BJJ a few months ago, always wanted to do try a martial art but was never able to fit it in with kids and work but finally managed it at the age of 35. Love doing it more than I could have imagined.

The other day I was rolling with a new guy who tried to turn me with my ankle and twisted my knee. I've hurt my mcl - not bad, lower legs not hanging off or anything but it's tender to the touch. I have got full range of motion.

I'm absolutely gutted to be missing training but don't want to make it worse. i'm 6 days since the injury now and everyday it hurts a bit less. Do you think I'm ok to train again when the pains gone or is it likely to take longer to fully heal? Doctor wasn't much use he just said keep resting it don't twist it again. Wondered if anyone had had the same sort of injury?

Haven't done the MCL but a few years ago I got a partial tear to my ACL, which is probably similar to what's happened to you. Had it scanned but by the time I got a diagnosis the pain had gone, so I'd carried on doing sport on it and had several more slight tears until eventually it completely ruptured. Now I have no ACL at all in my right knee. Don't be that guy me. Being injured sucks but being permanently damaged is a lot worse.

Give it a good few weeks. Do something that doesn't involve twisting movements on the knee - work on your conditioning and core strength. When you go back to training get a good quality knee support and take it easy - tell your coaches that you're nursing a knee injury.

Haven't done the MCL but a few years ago I got a partial tear to my ACL, which is probably similar to what's happened to you.Mine was also a partial tear or the ACL complicated by a Fat Pad Impingement. Sports Med doctor told me it was a double-whammy and to stay off of it until it healed. I didn't listen and here I am twenty-two years later, paying the price.
Listen to the doctor.

I'm recovering from a partial tear. It sucks. It's been 2 months now...mostly because I didn't rest it and tried to train with it hurt. I'm an idiot.

When I got my ACL snapped in a rugby game I also incurred a grade 2 tear in my MCL. That was 6 weeks in a brace (starting with very limited range slowly extending back out to full by the end) concurrent with 12 weeks of physio. Then I had to get the ACL reconstructed but that was a different story. Don't rush the recovery, swimming (try using just your arms) is good to keep your cardio up and if you can try and see a sports physiotherapist. Your knees will thank you later.
