Interesting to know who the MMA fighter was.

The article only says he did MMA not that he was a fighter. The mugger looked like a total dork, and wow did he get the **** kicked outa him. And for those who don't want to mess with the link.: A would-be mugger on Chicago’s Southwest Side picked on the wrong person — a mixed-martial artist — and ended up with two black eyes and a gunshot wound to the ankle, the police say.

Police say 24-year-old Anthony Miranda walked up to a parked car near 55th and Kenneth around 11:30 p.m. Friday and asked the driver — whose identity was not released by police — for a lighter.

When the driver said he didn’t have one, the police say Miranda pulled a handgun on the driver and demanded money. After getting some, he ordered the driver out of the car, Officer John Mirabelli said.

The mugging victim was able to get control of the gun, and the two wrestled, with Miranda accidentally firing his gun and shooting himself in the ankle during the fight, Mirabelli said.

The victim, who told police he’s a mixed-martial artist, held Miranda down until the police and found Miranda with a face full of cuts and two black eyes. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment.

Miranda, a convicted felon, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm and rdered held on $350,000 bail. Records show he has several convictions, including one for a residential burglary.

Fighter claims he competes in the UFC. True it could be a farce. Still researching to find out who the "victim" may have been.

The name hasn't been released for good reason, people. I would advise we don't follow up on the name of the fighter. The mugger might be a gang member and releasing the fighters name could mean a backlash in a more deadly form. I'm only making an inference, but if I smashed up a dude that bad who tried to mug me with a fucking gun, I would be requesting my photo with my hands raised in victory and my foot on the dudes face on the front page of the Tribune, unless the cops advised me that there is a good chance I could be in danger from letting everyone know it was me.

It is apparent that the fighter had some skill. Fucking mass lulz at the extensive bruising dude received.

That is a valid point considering the "crime" took place on the Southwest side. I retract my original intent.

This story is pure crap. MMA is a sport, and therefore useless for self-defense, particularly against hardened armed criminals.

No wait just a minute sonny jim. We still don't know who the fighter, it could have been someone who had actually trained in a true martial science. I know who my money's on....

I think you misunderestimate the fighter. He mixes TKD with Wing Chun and a bit of Aikido under a "built from the ground up", "scientifically developed" system of reality based self defence. True Mixed Martial Arts. Not that sport stuff, as mentioned previously.

No its true. I once took out six armed muggers using just aikido and one chun eye gouge.
They didn't stand a chance really, I was wearing my aikido pants.

The clear evidence that it wasn't Aikido, lies in the fact he is having to protect his identity for fear of reprisals.

Correctly used, the mugger would have instantly become universally enlightened, and filled with the light of peace.

By the time he was restrained, he would have no further thoughts of revenge or violence, and instead be planning a small business enterprise selling flower garlands in a hippy commune.

The actual truth is obvious to the keener mind: It was TKD, and the cuts and bruises are result of the mugger being kicked off his horse.
