Anyone have any experience with these guys? Their website is horrible but from what I've read about southern mantis, it sounds interesting.

Plus it seems they do some grappling...

They are students of paul whitrod who is very well regarded and has some proper fighting skill. Definitely worth a try.

What are you looking for in a Chinese martial art ?

If this Mantis place doesn't have what you're looking for, could I tempt you to try out a Tai Chi place that offers a hard workout and does wrestle and spar ?

Come and see us on Tuesday at 7.30.

Upstairs at the East Oxford Community Centre on Cowley road.

It's a simple community centre based club rather than a big dedicated gym but it's produced several successful amateur San Shou competitors.

We do forms and some funny looking 'TMA' exercises, but don't let it put you off. We work up a sweat and do live things too.

This is the website

You're probably going to be most interested in the two videos with 'sanshou' in the title. Those are all people from the class.

I've lived in Oxford for over a decade, but there are still lots of MA clubs in the area I don't know much about or haven't even heard of before. I don't know anything about the Chow Gar people I'm afraid.

p.s. if you're mainly interested in carrying on your Muay Thai training there's a big gym here http://www.omaa.org.uk

I started training in BJJ there a couple of months ago.

The Tai Chi club offers a chance to do some sparring under San Shou or Kuoshu rules if you're just looking to occasionally try something different.

Chow Gar SPM taught by Pete Orum Sifu. I have heard nothing but good things about him and from what I hear he is one tough dude. He's a long time student of Paul Whitrod so you know that what you are being taught is practical for fighting. Chow Gar also has a ground fighting form and Pete Orum also teaches a separate class for grappling/wrestling. He also hosts a lot of courses taught by Paul Whitrod. They also teach the weapons, tui na massage and the dit dar medicine. I'd recommend you give them a try (as well as the Wudang Tai Chi) to see if it suits you. Training is strenuous but it does toughen you up.
