Another student found this holiday contest. Basically people enter their instructor in a "Selfless Sensei" contest, talk about what he's done, and vote for them. The winner gets $1K worth of products from Karate depot (which will buy mats to replace the treacherous ones at our satellite location).

Beyond the fact it would help our dojo, which definitely isn't the richest club on the block (in fact it's struggling a bit financially at the moment), my instructor is a deserving candidate. He runs not one but two non-profit dojos (a 1.5 hour drive between them which he does most days), he became a foster parent to three troubled teenage boys, and is involved with (or started/runs) multiple programs for At Risk Youth. Some of them are what you'd expect, getting them into Judo for free to give them a positive environment they can grow in, but some are completely unrelated to MA (my point being he genuinely cares about people and isn't just trying to pimp Judo all over the place).

Its important to note that even if this guy isn't the greatest technician, competitor or instructor ever it is the fact that people like him give so generously of their time, energy and knowledge to spread Judo.

The common refrain here on bullshido is that Judo is 'cheap and widely avaliable' its because of people like this guy and BJJ could do well to learn from the Judo example and hopefully we will over the next few years see instructors providing training at cost basis rather than at profit basis.

The fact that people like this guy give so much back to the sport they love is what makes Judo one the best options for grappling sports for young people.

I think every Judoka should not only be thinking about how can they make themselves the best Judoka possible but also the most knowledgeable, approachable and helpful teacher possible.

Judo is first and foremost about education. So take what you learn and pass it on, all of it, never hold techniques back, teach everything to everyone and spread Judo as well and as wide as you can.

Like the guy in Maofas' post.

Voted for Sensei Stokes.

These are the type of people that keep judo alive here in the US. More power to them and give them all the help you can!

Some may not have noticed, but you can actually vote once per day. So you can all cast your votes again today and tomorrow etc... to ensure this guy wins.

Its in very small print just about the main box that his entry is in. If we keep it on the hush hush i.e don't post it on the FB comments below it hopefully none of the other entrants will notice it and then he will romp home.
