Yes, I know I didn't post my opinions. Chiblast posted this in the main forum. I thought it should be discussed here.

In this thread we were discussing push hands as a tool.

Yes, there is a compliant factor blah blah blah. Okay as tool I can understand but, the clip above is ridiculous.

It is the type of crap I heard. All your techniques that work standing work laying down. Sorry that's bullshit.

Seriously admit you are lacking a skill and teach what you know.

Looks like the fat guy actually has the potential to be a decent grappler if he decides to learn some proper grappling.

Alternatively they could train intensively at near full resistance for, ooh, 100 years or so, and maybe they would come up with a decent grappling system all on their own! That would be the long way to do it.

These guys are friggin sad. Not exactly a fighting school here. There is no way I can justify the dumb shit that they are trying to pull here. This is up there with the wing chun "anti-grapple"

I can however see how adding some sort of slap boxing or chi sau element to grappling training could help. Combining striking and grappling in sparring matches seems like an obvious training need. I know that alot of schools train only striking or grappling.

The great thing about ground fighting is that you can incorporate it into just about anything you already know.

The caveat is that you have to be relatively proficient in groundfighting principles, tactics, and techniques before you can do this. This guy forgot about that part.

Now with that said...

Because it's just a TaiChi practitioner's/instructor's seminar held for an Aikido school's students (probably not instructors), there is most likely a large disparity in skill regardless of anything lacking with regards to groundwork. And, while I'm not a grappler, it appears to me his partner in that clip doesn't know what he's supposed to be doing; his perceived "ruleset" (in quote) is different than the person giving the seminar. Frankly, it doesn't take too much of these types of level disparities to make just about anything work in such an instance.

Push hands can be anything from a series of drills to fully-resistant grappling. However, I've never seen a groundfighting component... it usually ends with the throw or takedown.

I suppose you *could* try to apply taiji principles to groundfighting, but I'm not sure it would still be "push hands".

This video made me sad.

The guy was doing some things right.

As far as "All of your techniques for standing up work on the ground" I would say not all techniques but I've noticed some of my old hand techniques showing up when I'm working on the ground. Its kind of funny, the more groundwork I do, the more standup stuff seems to pop up. In my opinion you have to know your groundfighting before you can apply standup principles and techniques. You can't be a 100% standup and say your stuff works on the ground.

Why I hate the first video and IMA or any MA that "adds," "finds," or "creates." grappling in their system.

Principly, i actually like some of this guys videos, he tends to get his point across very well.

HOWEVER:

This video shows he suffers from the same shit lots of kung-fu suffers from: He's convinced of his technical 'superiority' over MMA.

Clearly he has not really worked with a MMA fighter.
