To beat the living shit out of your opponent?

I sometimes get this really strong urge to start throwing down while in the guard.

It's been a month since my accident, so I can't say that it's still there. How much easier it would be to get that arm lock with a quick elbow to the nose!

Every time, mate. It's a pretty strong urge as my main style places a high emphasis on striking... but somehow i feel the judo instructor would be a bit unhappy if i KO'd some of her students...

Moose,

I'm from a striking backround as well. It just seems natural. I think the more I get relaxed while rolling, the stronger the urge.

Maybe a case of learnt reflexes being melded to new ones, ala BJJ.

O,

Ass grabbing and slapping was not what I was thinking. But thank you for sharing your experience. =o)

Are you saying you feel something like a berserker rage and see red, when you feel like you shouldn't?

Yeah, I know when you're coming from.

When roll, even if we're not striking at all, I still try to roll as if I have to worry about punches. This may not be the best strategy for competitive grappling, but I'm trying not to teach myself any bad habbits. But when pure BJJ people start sitting up in my guard, with their hands down and are looking to pass, it's so fucking tempting to pull 'em in just a bit and smak the shit out of them.

HAPK03,

This is coming from the man, that once I got him on his back, kicked me in the head. I have not forgiven you for that, and am doing more vale tudo for the next time we roll! =o)

Hey what the fuck do you expect me to do? Lie there and be swuished by the 260 pounds (or however much you weigh)of you?

Anytime, man. We can do the next West Coast thing in your neck of the woods next time, as long as there's space to train.

As soon as my shoulder heals, that is.

Yeah, it was fun though. What's funny, is that it didn't even register that I got kicked in the head till you said sorry, and then I was like, hey, that kinda hurt! hahahaha

I was in the zone baby! Yeah I understand, I was about to stack you and 260lbs is not fun to be stacked with. Taught me an important lesson though, and one where I've been at odds with myself on with sport BJJ.

Actually, it was completely unintentiional. I'm still not quite sure how it is that I kicked you. I just sort of felt my foot make impact, and then thought "shit, that's Anthony's head".

So, once again, I'm sorry.

Hehe, no worries bro. I actually started the whole movement. I was in your open guard, my left hand went under your right leg to start stacking you. I started to stand so I could stack you. As I did that, you moved your leg out of the way, as a defensive type reaction, which then had your foot meeting my head.

Anthony A yep agreed, it's really hard because in judo sometimes when we are fighting for grips my chi sau training kicks in and it's very hard to stop myself hitting the guy... luckily enough I can just use it to get them into a good position for a throw.

lol, Osiris. nice sig.

Anthony A, although i believe that in actual fighting you mix and match in rhythym, it seems to me that striking is the 'cop out' in grapple training. i get the urge to strike when i am being thwarted in a lock or position attempt. being generated by frustration, this urge keeps me from seeing my leverage mistakes. sticking with a particular move for a while, suffering losses in the quest for understanding, yields the greatest skills in the end. you figure out all the details and variations based on his resistance pattern that way. some stuff can take as long as a year or more to really appreciate.

must admit though that i prefer to have all techniques permitted. from standup to groundfight, nothing resets the match. but each 'weapon' needs to be developed independantly. that's why they have segmented the arts into different disciplines. like judo for throwing, and karate for striking. arts that combine both methods to whatever degree still have to teach individual techniques before combining them in sequence.

i feel that if you are trying to learn grappling, then striking will only be a deterence. you will use it to 'cheat' your way into holds. this will stop you from learning transitional flow, which imo is the whole point of grappling arts. this is entirely an 'academic' point.

all depends upon what 'rules' you are currently operating under.

peace.

The urge really comes up when you have them in a crossbody armbar position and they're resisting by gripping their hands together. Hammerfist to the face, hammerfist to the face....
