Practice those non-effective techniques in your mirrors all you want. it will do nothing for you in the real world, except may be- and i mean may-be impress the 12 year old your trying to pick up in your dojo's.
now with the bullshit aside, even though you most likely try and impress the little girls your flashy long drawn out high kicking wild open handed strikes WONT WORK.
why, because you'll forget everything as soon as the assault starts. being book smart in the martial arts will do nothing but impress your students and give you hard ons.
in real life, you will die...

Jamoke I thought you were a supporter of TMA and kata/forms and stuff? How do you suggest training? Something with a heavy emphasize on sparring? I'm not trolling, I'm actually curious (read confused) about what you think.
And please dont say ALL training is worthless, cuz thats just foolish.

To be fair one of those people who do the flash stuff almost kicked my ass once. He tried to punch me but missed and nearly fell over. I was laughing so hard he almost landed a hight twirly kick. Once I stoped laughing I just pulled him off his feet.
I still laugh about that day.

In defense of all trick kickers and flippers (I do that stuff on the side with some gymnastics as well). All the intelligent ones know that they aren't fighters, only performers. Some of them cross-train, but the pure "tricksters" know that they wouldn;t stand a chance in a real fight.

while I dont agree with everything you say, there is certainly alot of truth in your statement. Even when I spar I run into problems remembering techniques, but I make do with what I remember and know well. People that have solid basics (jab, cross, hook uppercut, round kick, move well and a strong defense) are the best fighters. Eventually however more complex techniques can become a part of ones repertoir.

remembering techniques is for RANK ADVANCEMENT only. not for survival!!

Survival. IMHO, to survive you have to develop instinctive reaction. To survive in the real world you best chance is a WEAPON. I prefer my Colt. MA is my last resort approach. The ability to use a knife is also key. But here your talking about survival. Your talking about a situation where you might have to take another persons life. The use of deadly force and knowing WHEN it can be applied. I don't nor do I suggest anyone should carry a concealed weapon without proper permits. Pluse taking someones life is a very BIG thing. Alot of what we talk about here is good excercise, fun, and could help us in a bad situation, but for survival we are talking more!
Just my opinion.

If you have to "remember" a technique, then you are not training enough.

Correct, this is why you need to spar against a fully resisting opponent. (not light-touch point sparing)
