New MA's

What are the newest martial art styles? I'm not talking about the latest crazes, I'm talking about the ones that have been created most recently. Would Jeet Kune Do be up there, or does something rank higher? Pardon my ignorance, as I'm a bit shady on my martial arts history...

JKD would be up there. So would Braziallian Jujitsu and a few others. Most newer systems are hybrid systems.

According to many, TKD and Hapkido are 20th century creations as well.

Olympic TKD yes, not the traditional one that i think it was called Howarang Do.

Tae Bo is more like aerobics...

If new means modern (ie. the last 30 yrs) then JKD began its inception in 1965 , JuJitsu was taught to the first of the Gracies in 1914 and their first "dojo" was opened in 1925 and capoeira had its makings from anywhere between the 17th and 19th centuries in relation to the slave trade . So these are not new by the above definition although JKD is on the cusp . Styles come and go , but systems evolve and grow if nutured by their practitioners and perhaps the question should be how have systems changed in recent times , what has been discarded , what has been added and why ?

Depends on what makes a martial art. It is a collection of techniques? Is a a handful of forms? Is it a fighting philosophy and theory?

Ed Parker took what others had taught him, reorganized it, tried to explain the princples behind it, and make a curriculm to teach the moves and princples to the masses. The fruits of his labor is called American Kenpo.

Bruce Lee basically did the same thing in JKD.

About 4 years ago my instructor came up with his own style called Five Animal Kenpo. It resembles American Kenpo, but is based on a comprehensive fighting theory that is absent in AK, teaches different strategies and techniques, and is entire separate even though it borrows the organizational structure.

So does Five Animal Kenpo count? How many students, schools, or blackbelts does a new style need before it can be counted as an established style? Does it make a difference if Five Animal Kenpo takes over the kenpo world and 10 years from now all the kenpo guys are doing it, or if it never goes beyond one little school in my home town?

every korean MA that you've heard of except traditional archery has roots no earlier than WWII. there's tons of random ass "self-defense" systems, karate offshoots, etc. out there as well.

Ever since I discovered vicadin for my knee after the surgery, I have become a kindler gentler miguksaram. <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> So I will simply direct Dr. Santo to some of the TKD history threads that have already been writen out. That should help answer some of the misconceptions.

Don't forget Ssirum (Korean wrestling). That has been around for a long time as well. However most of the more popular arts are indeed recent innovations.
