Which style, or self-defense program has had the biggest impact on you? Please no one mistake this for a "which style is the best" thread in disguise.

Probably the first style one takes.

Oh Crap, that means I'll always be stuck in the Shotokan rut...

The first style I did full contact grappling and striking in - MMA/Pancrase, then BJJ etc...MT was pretty good too - I did minimal MT though, but eventually I could see that it was much better than what I was doing before.

The first style I took (and am still taking)... Isshinryu Karate. I moved (big surprise in the military) and was unable to find an instructor to train with, so I went looking at other styles... I tried many of them for a little while, but they just didn't "feel right". Eventually, after damn near 6 years of searching, I was able to locate an Isshinryu instructor and finally came back home.

honestly every style I've ever done (around a dozen of them) has impacted me greatly. Even shit like TKD has changed the way I think about fighting.

It has to be Taekwondo for me. I've been doing it for 10 years and counting, and even though I do my best to learn other styles and disciplines in the world of martial arts, I still tend to add and apply them to my base art, which is TKD.

Hmm. Shotokan Karate. It got me seriously into martial arts. Even though I eventually realised that it wasn't that good for me. What pissed me off the most is that my Sensei was a former wrestling coach and had some damn good grappling skills and just hardly ever taught any of it, like once every 3 months if I was lucky.
