this guy charles chi(nymatc.com) was a liar his whole life, arrested years ago for posing as an acupuncturist, and teaching as a professor in a college, had the old story of chinese father who taught him medicine, etc as well as martial arts. he claims to have fought in thailand, and been trained in thailand, and the phillipines, as well as china, claims to have had cus damato as his boxing coach in the marines, claims to have been the marine boxing champ, and claims to have been a stunt man in movies, etc etc. he is now legite in jkd, and has gained some popularity, he is a descent martial artist, and has trained for years from what i hear, however he will not spar or grapple his students or anyone else
he has been certifying guys in shooto, and has never been ramnked himself. my friend trained with him for years and was kicked out after questioning all the lies. he now has over 200 students, and has legite rankings in a few things, but all by long distance, and politically motivated. he also mentioned he was in the ultimate blackbelt test, some new promo to supposedly have blackbelts keep their training up to date, etc. anyway, i wanted to give the heads up, because many people have been fooled by this guy.
oh yeah, he also claims to have met his wife, who is a master of filipino arts, in the phillipines, unfortunately his wife has no training at all, and they met in ny.

That's right by me, I actually looked into his school, but decided against it becasue his contracts are ridiculous. But from what I've seen he's actually ranked through Dan Inosanto. I don't know if ranked is the proper term for JKD/Kali.
Also, where do you train? I'm looking for a school right now.

Okay, a lesson in evidence.

1) "arrested years ago for posing as an acupuncturist", provide newspaper cite, clipping or other proof of this arrest. Bonus, it hurts his rep while protecting you from libel.

2) "and teaching as a professor in a college," same as #1, provide proof of the arrest and if possible the conviction. Please make sure to mention the statute he was convicted under.

3) "had the old story of chinese father who taught him medicine, etc as well as martial arts", explain why this is demonstratively false, for example he is not of Chinese extraction.

4) "he claims to have fought in thailand, and been trained in thailand, and the phillipines, as well as china," find out if he is affiliated with any Thai boxing organizations and try to find if he's ever visited them in their home country.

5)"claims to have had cus damato as his boxing coach in the marines, claims to have been the marine boxing champ," Isolate and provide evidence he made this claim, when, where, in front of who. Research Cus Damato's biography and ever find out if Cus was in the marines. File a FOIA on your guy to find out if he was ever in the Marines. Contact the USMC to find out if they keep records of who their boxing champs are, and if your guy is on the list.

6) "he has been certifying guys in shooto, and has never been ramnked himself." explain who gives out rank in shooto and who founded the organization.

7) "oh yeah, he also claims to have met his wife, who is a master of filipino arts, in the phillipines, unfortunately his wife has no training at all, and they met in ny." Obtain his marriage certificate which will indicate the true birthplace of his wife.

In conclusion, man-up, and conduct a real investigation.

How old is this guy? Cus D'Amato died in 1985 so if this guy's about 30, he'd be only about 10 years old when Cus died.

i guess i dont have proof, im not an investigator, you can start by looking at ny newsday sept 26 of 04 for his article on himself, where he states about the military, etc, and all the other stuff.
my bud was training with him when he and his wife met, and was a student of his, when all the other stuff went down. i myself checked the guy out, and he wasnt bas as far as technique. but in the circles, he is known for not being honest, he is certified in jkd legitimately as of a year ago.
i just figured id thro the word out, i wont waste time investigating, as i dont train in that area, but like i said he is not a bad martial artist,but many of his claims can be disputed
i asked my bud, and i apologize, he was not arrested, he was escorted out. my bud said he did not go to jail. with all the other stories, thers no disproof, as well as no proof.it was all heresay, so i apologize if any error was made as far as libel, etc.

as far as schools to check out, try fight house in ny, alot of good groups train there, and my bud who gave me the info trains wing chun there.

Honest boy, currently I am involved in three investigations for Bullshido. At the current moment I do not have the time to take on a fourth on behalf of an un-named member, who won't do even basic "leg work" in order to help out. You don't need to be an "investigator" you simply have to be willing to look things up.

We are not McDonalds, you don't simply order your investigations here. Now either get off the sofa, and help out with your own proposal or STFU.

no problem guys, i got a little leary after the libel comment, i dont want any problems for me or my family as far as legalities. i have no agenda, or i would push it farther, it was just a heads up for anyone looking in that area. i know the facts from people around me, and theres no written proof, just experiences from students, etc. im sure proof can be found by any students .
im new to the board, and didnt realize it was like investigational, i was just giving the heads up. as far as me sounding like less aggressive, it was agin, because of any legality. im new to this stuff, and dont know the law, or any specifics i could be liable for. i know several of his students who were with him for years, and they all had the same things to say.

I know many people who have achieved high ranks in diffrent martial arts and none of them have ever felt the need to video tape tests or training. I must admit id be weary of someone making these claims but I have seen no proof either way.

needforfreedom,i hear ya, i would think that an instructor could provide contacts to who they were ranked under, and that would help. and if your teaching for fifteen years or more, i would imagine that at least one student woul have competed in something, and possibly opened a school of his own, etc. and they could be contacted as well.
