Yet another "master" jumps out of the woodwork. What exactly is a "Master of Defense" anyway? He must be good if he's providing the "highest caliber of defense training and services." Read on and be enlightened.

In the following thread the exhaulted MOD receives "recognition" for his his contribution to the war on terror when his buddy gives him a company coin while returning home on R&R leave. Man, you'd think he was given the Medal of Honor or something. :icon_puke

If this isn't McDojo, I don't know what is.

It's all a bunch of crap, but at least he doesn't throw in a photo montage like Phat Phil.

I especially enjoyed reading that disclosing the unit which "awarded" him the coin is some sort of outrageous OPSEC violation.

It must be true though....there are three pages of people who believe him, and that many people can't be fooled :icon_roll

I'm pretty sure "Master of Defense" is a new feat in D&D 3.5.

...Maybe it's a variation to Master of the Universe? He-man will be angry...
By "Gild" does the mean "Guild"?

Very interesting. It's a little un-nerving he calls himself "Master of Defense".

Mster of Defence was a title used by European weapons intructors from the dark ages until maybe 150 years ago. It was sort of a generic catch-all term, and with little or no certification or verification records, was probably the first recorded case of McDojoism. This guy either plays way to much D&D or has gone to a couple of Ren Faires.

Master of Defense?
well frankly this guy is a nut.. but there is nothing wrong with
the title persay...
I would say someone like Clements, who is the ARMA big dog, or
any of a number of firearm instructors could claim the title without
it being foolish. Keating (who takes the title "Master at Arms") comes
to mind. Clements is a reconstructionist fencer type. Keating is a
gunfighter who took up Kali, JKD and a whole assload of other things.
the main points being...
1. It's a historical European title, so the Arts trained/taught should
be (at least partially) European. Greco-Roman, Western Archery,
Savate, Boxing (preferably with the dirty stuff still in there), or
(especially these days) Fencing or Firearms.
2. The second point is that to be a "Master of Defense" historical
involved offering public chalenge to all and sundry in a public
forum. Playing the "Prize" is a time honored custom.
3. It's "Master" in the sense of being a master of a trade like
plumbing. In this sense.. if I can open a school and be a professional
(i.e. eat off my trade) then bitches should show up and fight or
shut the fuck up.
If I ever open a school I'll likely call it a Salle d'Armes. In this since
Maestro is just a school master or a master tradesman... one who
is past journeyman and makes their living off their trade.

Good point but I'd like to point out that John does not claim the title "master" of anything nor does anyone in ARMA. Most of us just feel that no one has really come that far yet in our studies. Legitimate reconstruction of medieval and renaissance fighting arts is still in it's infancy and although we are learning a lot and developing what I believe is a very valid, martially sound curriculum, we aren't "there" yet.

This dude is in my neighborhood, so to speak. That 248 area code encompasses a large area but it's southern boarder is two miles from here. He sure likes the over-the-top marketing. Note the use of the word "tactical." It's a dead giveaway.
On his bio page he cites Live Safe Academy and Ian Kinder. Although I've met Ian once a few years ago, that doesn't mean shit. However, he has a very good reputation around these parts as a firearms instructor.

That seems to be the way that these clowns get started, hook up with somebody with a decent reputation and go overboard. I agree that this Janulis fellow over-uses the term "tactical". Please note that there is nothing in this man's bio that would even come close to being any sort of qualification as a "tactical" instructor. My take on the whole thing is that he has hooked up with some reputable people, and has purchase some "tactical" videos from Paladin Press and maybe US Cav or Ranger Joe's and is now marketing his very own "innovative tactical training system". In short, he's a plagarist rather than a pugilist. :5badair: I certainly hope nobdy takes this guy seriously.

I like the "operators" training bit. I wonder if any LE dept. has, would or even could have him in for training. Dont most LE agencies require some sort of certification before they can start teaching cops weapons and use of force techniques? Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.
