What the hell is a Jakalope?

It's an animal found in the southwestern parts of the United States. Typically they live in bushes in the high desert. Dochter knows more about them than I do.

Its a jack rabbit with antlers. Very rare.
How does that work?
Is it a mythological creature? Cause I figured speciation would prevent this.

I didn't see this one first, so see my reply to Os.

Apparently there is some kind of mutation in a cartilage differentiation factor that gives these things large bumps on their heads that resemble antlers.
The above is a cheap photoshop though

Ahh, see the person who told me about this, said they were a matting between an antilope, and a jack rabbit. I was sure they were full of it because of spcieation, and i couldn't find a pic.
but a mutation makes sense.

yeah, an antelope could fit a whole rabbit inside its vagina.

Heh.
True.
So are they rare because of the actions of man, or just a rare species?

They're not that rare (in the southwest). The mutation came about naturally through evolution(AFAIK)

You always see the mounted heads of them at sporting goods stores as gag gifts, those aren't the real ones, just fake ones.
From what I understand, due to the rarity you aren't able to hunt or trap them. I'm not much of a hunter though.

I see, what purpose do they serve?
Everything on google.ca turns up is on the band.

The "horns"? I assume they must be some kind of defense mechanism against predation, but I don't really know.

Oh yeah, good point.
Now, would a jack rabbit be strong enough to use them effectively?
