There are two factions among us here at bullshido, and this poll is going to set the record straight once and for all.
Option 1:
Pasta is cooked, then water is drained from the pot. Sauce is added to the pot with the pasta where the pasta finished cooking in the sauce. The pasta/sauce mixture is then plated and served.
Option 2:
Pasta is cooked and served on a plate. a bowl of heated sauce is also placed on the table for the guests to serve themselves from.
Sauce in this case is a standard premade, store bought Prego.

Sauce imposition by the state is for evil commie dictators.

My take on this: Option 1 is clearly the standard, italian way to cook pasta. It allows for the flavors of the sauce to penetrate the pasta. It's also less to clean up.
my support: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_13891,00.html
Cook the spaghetti in the boiling water according to package directions, until tender yet al dente. Drain the spaghetti, add it to the pan with the sauce and toss over high heat 2 minutes. Divide evenly among 4 warmed pasta bowls and serve immediately.

Bring 6 quarts of water to a boil and add 2 tablespoons salt. Drop the spaghetti into the water and cook according to the package instructions until 1 minute short of al dente. Drain the spaghetti and toss into the pepper mixture and place pan over high heat. Cook the spaghetti in the peppers until dressed like a good pasta dish, about 45 seconds. Pour into a warmed bowl and serve immediately.

Sauce cooked into the pasta actually does taste better.
Alfredo and cream-based sauces, however, are for decadent capitalist pigs who grow fat on the labour of the common tomato sauce-using man and suck his tax money away to pay for their bypass surgery. Those sauces also taste terrible.

keep them separate, after draining the noodles put a little bit of "gravy" in the noodles and heat it for a little bit mixing it in, this will flavor the noodles
and all the Italians I met in Chicago constantly reminded me that it wasn't sauce, it's gravy, that's right red gravy

If you serve them seperately, people can choose the amount of sauce they want.
It's about the right to choose! It's MY PASTA!

Sauce is to be served seperately, this allows you to dictate how much you would like to drown your pasta.
Always option 1 even if the sauce is bought premade.
