well the kemp-kido-kan system is the best new karate system i have personally trainned in bar-none since it has only the essentials of sanchin-ryu jujitsu, chinesse kempo, american kempo, aikido, judo, escrima, iaido, and wing-chun, with some jeet kune do and , hallo-ryu ju jitsu. founded by my sifu grandmaster thomas hughes. the white-orange belts are primarily ju-jitsu (sanchin-ryu flow locks) with some kempo after that it gets literaly hardcore into kempo. and aikido with judo jkd wing-chun all blended evenly into the system. contact me if anyone wants history on the art or any technique descriptions or anything.

Ok, I'll bite. Tell us about this art.

And that was the styles fault because your instructor was too stupid to show groud techniques. I like ISSHINRYU myself at least where I train spar every class and ground work is part of the training. Lots of work on hand and foot speed , low kicks

Your right. I should have paid more attention during the grappling katas.

My experience with Wado was very good.

We had medium/heavy sparring twice a week (wearing shin guards and gloves - no head or chest protectors), and a clinching/throwing/groundfighting class once a week.

Lots of bruises to go home with ...

Where did you train?

Don't know if Jason Bourne or anyone else still cares about this thread, but I practice Wado, so I thought I'd ring in late, rather than never.

If it's taught well, there is a hell of a lot to learn. It is more fluid than other styles of karate with a lot more emphasis on body shifting and movement, from what I've seen. There is some grappling that can be traced back to it's SYRJJ heritage. Many schools, however, do not teach it.

We train kata, and waza, and kihon kumite, as well as sparring. Some schools in the area spar a hell of a lot more than we do (we do it maybe once a week for 1/2 hr, sometimes more, but not much). I've noticed that, in general, our fundamentals seem to be better. However, the good fighters from the other schools are very quick with their timing.

As for what someone else said about the Wado fighter hitting once, then stopping, that guy must've been used to point fighting. We don't generally do it that way.

Like any other style, it's your sensei and his attitude that makes the school. Our guy has an attitude of "if it doesn't work, I don't teach it." It keeps us grounded in practical applications instead of some airy-fairy bull that I've seen from other sensei. I'm very happy where I am, but there aren't alot of other Wado schools in my area that have impressed me, so if you decide to take it up, research the sensei thoroughly.

I think you will find a lot of Karate-do is lacking in ground work, and you will have to seek out a style like Judo, or BJJ or something with a ground focus to balance your training. Luckily for me, my Sensei, besides being a 7th Dan in Isshin-ryu, is also a San Dan in JJ ... it really helps us out to have an "Isshin-ryu guy" tain us as he can easily demonstrate a multitude of throws and joint locks out of the Isshin-ryu katas.

As far as Wado ... we have new guy in our class now who was a Ich-Kyu in Wado. He left his dojo to come train with us. He is an okay fighter, but what I have noticed is that the deep stances in Wado leave him less mobile in the ring. He is also a very linear fighter ... front, back, side to side, that has really left him vulnerable in the ring.

You might want to double check with him. Our stances are much closer to standup than either the Shotokan or Goju I've seen. If he's going down deep, and moving in a linear way, it ain't Wado. At least it shouldn't be. We're the guys who use body shifting and angular motion. But, as I said, not all schools are created equally.
