Positive Impressions (from watching a class) :

1. Lots of young, strong and well-conditioned students.
2. Medium to Full Contact Sparring, with headgear, boxing gloves and shin guards, 2/3x a week.
3. World-class competitor instructor.
4. Monday - Saturday classes.

Negative Impressions :

1. Since they are connected to a 'lineage', they have 30 minutes of forms (Choy Li Fut) and 15 minutes of basics (punching and kicking in lines) in all classes.
2. Sports oriented. Almost no relation to SD.

Should I take it, instead of Krav-Maga (please refer to my previous thread) ?

Judo is also another option.

Instead of doing a bunch of different threads, it would be more useful to put all your options side by side for comparison.

Jason,

Where do you live. Maybe we can assist in finding a good school for you. I personally think Krav Maga isn't as good as people make it out to be.

Um....San shou and San da are literally the same thing. Two different names for the same concept. Probably the sanshou you saw was more sports-oriented because it was taught in a choy li fut school of Kung Fu.

I am taught at a wushu school, and what you want to learn, they'll teach. You wanna learn sports oriented stuff? Sure, they'll teach that. You want to learn how to kick hard, and kick ass? They'll teach you that too. You just have to work hard on what the instructor tells you.

See if it might be the same thing here.

What do you mean by this line ? Well, more specifically what do the letters "SD" stand for in this sentance ?

Hey dude, nothing wrong with forms, and actually, Choy Li Fut kicks serious ass.

San Shou rules, and Choy Li Fut kicks ass.

Are you training at John Wai's school in Florida? Nothing wrong with Choy Li Fut forms, they're gems I think. As for San Shou being sprots oriented you could say the same thing about any style that competes in the UFC/pride K-1 couldn't you?

Damn, I wish I was lucky enough to learn some San Shou - I think I'd love it...

Many San Shou fighters use Kung Fu techniques and principles.

Take the Choi Li Fut/San Shou .

Theres NOTHING wrong with Forms , Its JUST like SHadowboxing when treated correctly , and San Shou/San Da fighters have ALWAYS worked from a Base Kung Fu system traditionally . They STILL win .

I've found Choy Li Fut is interesting as a martial art, but it's fighting applications are near useless. Funny story about this if anyone wants to know.

Yes, I want to know, and why are they useless?

Isn't CLF the art that Wing Chun always beat in those roof top fights?

I'd imagine self defense, although there is a slight chance he means "Shaolin do"
