I've been giving Krav-Maga a try for the last couple of months and hadn't had yet one single chance to spar, despite the fact that I've been training (other MAs, of course) for the last 10 years.

Last night, when asked by another beginner, the instructor told us that LIGHT / NORMAL sparring starts at green belt, which would roughly take 3 years of training to reach. I thought he was kidding and then asked when HARD sparring would start. "2 years later, at purple belt level", he said seriously.

I simply left and have no plans to come back !

Is that how KM is in your area also ?

Regardless if it's KM or not, any school that teaches in that manner is B.S. There is nothing wrong with sparring within two weeks IMHO.

Teaching that way is ridiculous. My MT coach once told me that two months is time enough for someone to get the basics and start sparring - two years is, I think, absurd.

I was allowed to spar two weeks after the program started. It was light contact the first couple times and now its full with throwing and ground work allowed. It sounds like your instructor sucks.

that is a bogus KM school probably, or one of those TKD schools that teah KM for $$$. At my KM school beginners were allowed to fight (with some guidelines) after about a month. I mean absolute beginners who did not know how to throw a punch or a kick. After they learned cross, jab and a kick or two, they were allowed to spar. We fought alot, even in drills it was not uncommon to get hit a few times pretty hard. There was alot of contact.

I loved taking KM because we got to fight...just now i am poor and have no $$$. But for all the marketing bashing, my instructor said i could train for free until i found work. (i just don't like freebies, and have been full time looking for work). So not all KM schools are in it for the $$$. I recommend e-mailing the KM headquarters to tell them about the sparring situation. The people like tight quality control and will usually address such issues seriously. KM HQ can not be at every school all the time.

It is not like that at my KM school. We started sparring after the first 2 weeks. As long as you have the equipment you can spar.

Seems that, apparently, things are not good for KM in Brazil.If Mestre Kobi himself takes about two years to let a student spar...

When I took Krav maga, we were sparring before I even started class, heck, we were sparring when I was signing the contract, on the way to the change room, while changing ( didn't care much for that), on the way out of the change room, through the gym door, in the class, after class, heck, they even followed me to my car and we sparred in the parking lot.
Luckly I gave them a false address or they might have gone to my home and we'd be sparring there too.

at my KM school we did alot. So your post could mean you sparred to much it seemed never ending
