Earlier tonight my kru mentioned that the "proper" clothing to be wearing is a set of hand wraps, the academy's t-shirt (or tanktop), and a pair of Thai trunks - conveniently, all available upstairs. Does this smack of greed to anyone, or are there valid reasons for having things this way? Seems to me that a regular t-shirts and gym shorts should be just fine.

At my gym you have to wear the school shirt when you train, but you do get a free team shirt when you join. Most people invest in a rash guard that has the team logo though.
In my school, printed tees need to be the schools, or else you can wear a plain one. Seems fair to me.

It smacks of greed. But as long as you're getting good training, I guess you have to pay the price. Unless you have other training options. I trained at a place last summer that required you to wear the school tee, which was $19.95. I got owned, but at least the training was good.

just be glad its not a bjj gi that you have to buy. handwraps you shoudl wear either way, even if you don't buy it from your school. the shirt is a uniform, which is fine, and the MT shorts are tradition i guess. I don't HAVE to wair thai boxing shorts, but I choose to do so cuz they're comfy and it's kinda cool to wear :)

That doesn't sound /too/ outrageous. Especially if they sell the items for only slightly more than you would pay retail. I think the big problem comes if they expect you to buy a new pair of different colored shorts every month after you pay them to take a test of some sort.

When I was taking TKD at the junior college, we could wear whatever we liked - sweats, shorts, or my teacher would order uniforms from Century for us, giving us the school discount. My most recent school (it closed in March) charged $55 for a gi, $160 for all the sparring gear in a large bag. There may have been a small profit on the gear, but not much. And personally, I couldn't consider it greed ...many good teachers have to have day jobs because it's damned hard to make a living running your own school.

We want everyone to look alike in the Kempo uniform sold onsite but not mandatory. Bills don't pay themselves. I would love to teach and train for free but that's not reality. Greed? does not sound like it to me.

For real.
Also gym shorts are inferior to Thai shorts for unrestricted kicks and knees.

Yup same.
As for buying uniform...its kinda normal. Its ok as long as they don't charge you 3 million dollars per shirt. You also know there is something wrong when the school makes you buy like a wardrobe of their stuff.
Ie at my old wing chun school you had to buy a shirt pants socks sash shoes etc.....

The only dressing rule in my gym is you can´t step on the tatami with shoes on. I used to train with a t-shirt and gym shorts. I ended buying the gym´s tank top (12€) and a pair of thai trunks (20€), quality is good and I feel more confortable with bith than with my previous outfit. Also, I look coler. And the quality is good.
Also, it wasn´t mandatory to buy the gear, they had spare gloves to practice, but I guess anyvbody who enjoys training will eventually end buying their own gloves. My instructor gets a disccount when buying clothing and we usually buy from him. I think he charges us a little bit more than what he pays, but still, we get cheaper prices than those we would get if we were buying the items on our own. No problem with me here, a man has to make a living. In my country, most gym owners do hardly get a living. I wouldn´t call it greed, I would call it surviving.
Oh, and on a side note, it was funny to realize that my thai trunks are exctly the same that those chaosexmachina wears in his avatar :)
