I've decided to try and pursue some form of martial arts training again, after a long absence, and I was wondering if any of you guys that train in southern california area could point me in the right direction. I just moved into the Inland Empire area and I'm having a hard time finding a good school, as I don't know too many people yet, and it's been a while since I last trained.

I took a couple years of Kung Fu in high school, but I ended up quitting because I didn't feel it was doing anything for me and haven't really trained since then. The instructors were significantly overwieght, and we spent most of our time doing forms and practicing techniques against unresisting partners, and we never sparred. When anyone asked about the real world effectiveness of our training, they were told that the techniques were "too deadly" for full contact demonstration, and were only suitable for life/death encounters.

In retrospect, it seems clear that I was training at a McDojo, although I didn't realize it at the time. I'm having trouble finding a school in this area that doesn't fit the same mold; I've checked out some places I got from the phone book, but most of them have been McDojos.

The style isn't terribly important, although it would be cool if I could find a Kyokushin or Muay Thai school in the Inland Empire. Failing that, I'd just like to find a decent place(any style) that incorporates aliveness into their regimen and promotes at least a basic level of athleticism.

Can any of you guys point me in the right direction?

I'd really appreciate the help.

San Bernardino, but anywhere within that general area would work. 20-30 min drive wouldn't be a problem.

There are tons of SoCal guys on this site, so just give them time to respond. You'll have many choices.

I know I dont post alot but I do live in southern california and I do pass 5 or 6 other dojos on the way to mine from my house(those being the ones that can be visually seen without driving off to far from balboa). Considering every other block in Los Angeles has a dojo, possibly mcdojo, it might be a little hard to find a good dojo. But if you look around a little it shouldnt be too hard. How far are you from Northridge/ Granada hills?

It is if you've just moved there and don't know the area or the people very well.

Southern CA has lots of good schools, I just can't seem to find one in my area. I'm about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, and that seems to be where most of the good schools in southern ca are located. If I lived down there, I wouldn't have asked for help. I've been checking out schools as time permits, mainly from the phone book, and I'm getting tired of driving all over hell and back only to find McDojo's.

There's a boxing club right around the corner from me that seems pretty cool, but that's all I've been able to find. I was just hoping you guys could help save me some time and point me in the right direction.

I'm about 80 miles away from Northridge, a little too far for me to commute on a regular basis.
