Eight years of crosstraining for me on and off. Never bothered with the competitions although I have schooled plenty who have won them. Then again, I have been schooled plenty of times by those who are better than me. I got a lot of buds into it so it help keep the fire alive.

8 years shotokan karate
10 years TKD
2 years BJJ

I have won 2 world championships in "point fighting".
Ive also been to many open tournaments in shotokan, althought the competition was no where near as good or challenging for me, although it was presented as "full contact" Ive had many point matches where Ive been hit harder and had a tougher time with the competition. Thats just my 2 cents on it.
I currently teach full time, and am looking to open my own school. The school has about 300 students.

Sam: One week of karate? What the hell happened there?

I went to two lessons. Bear in mind I'm overweight and lazy. Doing constant reps of high kicks, punches, sit-ups and press-ups is far from my ideal way to pass time. I wanted to learn some better striking, but I reckoned it just wasn't worth the sweat (about half a pint for an hours workout).
I got really depressed when we started doing 2 man drills and I was putting in more power than the senior students. I also got told off for not blocking punches (i was deflecting them instead).
I've no idea if this is normal for a karate class or not, but in the end, I just couldn't be bothered.
