Fan fighting video and question

If you take alook at the downloads on the above site you see loads of techniques with different weapons to do with Hapkido. I wonder about the fan weapon- are they useful- does anyone practice in this and what are the benefits - I presume the fan is made of metal with a knife edge? Who used to use these weapons?

Urghh... again, compliant ukes make anything possible. The fan techniques don't appear to have anything to do with it being a fan, the same things can be done with a short stick or knife. As for who used to use steel fans, I'd presume bodyguards would need something not instantly recognisable as a weapon. Also handy for keeping cool in summer.
