Yes, and lots of people do charge straight into fights. So, faced with someone like that, I MIGHT straight blast. I have to say, I throw a punch at someone and they come back with a wing chun-ish reference point/pak sao/lap sao kind of hand move I'm reconsidering attacking them. 'Cause they know something and maybe we take the same art and I'm about to get my ass kicked.
I do not consider myself a great fighter. I'm competant. I'm pretty good at seeing stuff, though, even if I can't do it yet. And I'm fanatical about training so I spend a lot of time thinking about these things. I dream about the gym.
I'm actually interested in knowing: have you ever been on the end of a proper straight blast? (Not WC chain punching -- quite different, really). I value other people's first hand experience.

JKDChick:
If someone charges straight at you, a penetrative strike is more to your advantage. Your opponent is already closing, so why mess around? Further, if you just wanted to stop them, a single strike will do just as well and there's no need to use multiple strikes.
No, I have never been dead-on hit by one, though I have been 'clipped' by one while slipping, and holding a focus mitt doesn't count.
Since we're asking questions:
What is your reason for training in a martial art? Why did you choose JKD? Have you read the Tao of Jeet Kune Do? How long before you go your own way?

Jeet Kune Do originally did not have many grapples since Bruce Lee didn't know about the groudn too much (But he had a clue since he did study Judo) well nowadays most JKD people happen to also practice BJJ. Jeet Kune Do isn't a style.
As for muay thai, a lot of JKD people use Thai kicks too but soem disagree due to its telepathic nature.
I personally use Thai kicks...

I dip into the Tao rather than read it back to back. It's got some great tips but it's very unfocused -- which makes sense since he died while organising it. I respect Bruce as an innovator but I don't worship him as some people do.
I was in TKD for 5 years, I enjoyed it, but something was missing. I had some health problems, a thyroid condition that nearly killed me and made me gain 60 pounds (I was running everyday and fencing -- BC Women's Sabre Champ -- and still gaining weight). I was sick of being fat and I wanted to get into something realistic. I asked a stunt man I know (I work in the film industry) "Where would I got to learn martial arts/self-defense without all the bowing and bullshit? Just good, solid fighting and stuff." he directed me to my current club, which happens to be affiliated with Paul Vunak's PFS. I took one private lesson and I was hooked.
I'm literally like a junkie -- my whole life revolves around my next class or 'fix'.

SHHH! $#!^, I wasn't asking you. :D
Actually, the problem is that so many people teach JKD as a style or believe that it means cross-training in a variety of arts, such as BJJ, MT, and so forth. JKD doesn't exist as intended.... Anyone who understands JKD, doesn't stay with JKD, except to help others out. The current state of the JKD community is pretty pathetic. Even Lee wrote that it was just a finger pointing the way (as he understood it).

you're all losers (except my honey JKDChick) and know nothing about kicking. Side kick is for fairy pussies, and if your round kick isn't more powerful, then your round kick sucks. Take MT you fucking losers.....
You're confusing terms here. 'powerfull' and 'damaging'. The question at hand was with regards to which is more 'powerfull'. A side kick is jsut plain more powerfull. I've seen professional thai boxers at work on the bag and san da fighters as well and neither of them can buckle the bag the way a good side kick can.
A thai round kick may hurt more. It may be more likely to break bones but in terms of pure physics, in terms of how many newtons of force it transmits to the target, a side kick has greater potential. I have been lifted clear of the ground by side kicks. When was the last time you saw a roundhouse kick lift someone off the ground and send them through the air?
Sheol:
I gotto go with JKD Chick on this. It sounds like you've never been on the receiving end of a proper straight blast.
You asked what can a straight blast acomplish that one good punch can't? Think about what your asking man! What can a series of punches in rapid succesion do that one punch can't? Why not just ask why bother with combos because it's better to just land one good punch . . .
About combos:
While faking is part of good combos, a fake needs to be realistic, or better yet REAL ! I don't use punches to try to set up kicks. I use punches to try to hit people. Sometimes the open that's created when one punch is blocked/evaded/deflected just happens to be most easily capitalized on by a kick.
If your trying to set up your favorite technique then your not in the moment. You're thinking ahead to what could be instead of focusing on what IS.

Omar,
Don't mind IGBJJ. He's desperately trying to get the same spark as PD but the difference is that PD will come out with something useful from time to time were as IGBJJ obviously is FOS. What he really knows about MT would fit under my fingernail.
I am with JKDChick too. A Chit Sum (Straight Blast) FREAKIN HURTS and it is relatively easy to deliver. Catch one on the nose and you will most likely be looking like a racoon.

Very true. thats what I was trying to sya earlier. If you think that every punch or kick you throw is going to land sheol you are the one who is deluded. Of course you have to use combinations, if you look back at the older posts you will see my first post was about the toe punching quote and the advocation of combinations. You should realise also though ( and if you dont know this then you must be FOS) that if you throw one technique- to its full power and with accuracy then it will provoke a response from your opponent. It may be unexpected, it may be just what you were hoping for if you didnt succeed with your first attempt, you may put them flat on their back. Being aware and able to improvise in the moment is what everyone here is trying to do, no? If your punch moves there head to where you cant kick or follow in then you dont do it. Just because I talk about a combination doesnt mean that I think it will work every time.
Seperating sparring and self defense is delusion?
If you dont then you are delusional!
Its not practical to practise knocking lumps out of eachother in training, you tend to run out of classmates. In the self defense aspects we learn to strike to the groin, eyes, throat etc as you would in reality to an attacker. I hope your school is close to an accident an emergency room cause it sounds like youll need it.
Ive said it before but you wouldnt say an olympic boxer would be a bad fighter cause he practices in a ring with rules, a point system and protective gear. There is no difference apart from the 'martial arts should be taught this way ' attitude that you clearly have.
>Its not practical to practise knocking lumps out of eachother in training
I agree, you end up doing more harm than good.
injuries are common, and you end up not being able to train at all.

fools, I already told you why the round kick is more powerful, I'm not going to keep repeatng myself for you morons. Physics is behind the round kick genius. Body weight and centrifugal force give power to the round kick.....your legs and legs alone give power to the sidekick. You all suck and don't know shit about anything.

Umm... its centripetal force, not centrifugal.
