View Full Version : Student Assistant Instructors

I hate having lame ass non-skilled students being used as assistant instructors. I'm talking about students with less than one year's experience here guys. Maybe it's my ego but I can't take it. It just burns my ass. This is what goes on at my school. Although, I like the classes on the whole there are days when I ask myself, "why do I still come here?" - sometimes I just don't know. There's nothing quite like being critised by a student who thinks they have skill, but in reality has very little to none. Why does the teacher assign such a task to inexperienced and unskilled students? I totally resent it! It's even worse when you KNOW you can kick the living daylights out of them. I feel they have some balls (or something else) to correct MY technique (which is usually much better) - Fuk them! If I see one of these ass-smooching students walking my way, I give them such a fukin hate stare that they usually keep walking on by me. I would love to ask the teacher why he "assigns" these hacks to assist him, but I don't want to offend him. I do respect him as a teacher but some of his decisions are very, very poor! What's a MastaWannaB to do? Anyone else have this problem at their school? Am I being foolish or do I have a legitimate gripe here?

Start by asking the instructor (in private) why he feels that student is qualified to teach. Raise the topic in a level headed way and let him know that you feel that your techniques are better than the student he has teaching. Are you a senior in the class or are you a junior to the assistant?

I have the feeling if I asked the teacher he may just think it's my ego that's getting upset. The reality is I'm a much better MA than most other people in the class (and a senior to them). I think the teacher is showing favorites and just catering to a select few.

dont say anything of the sort wannabe and dont take advice from this mcdaddy who posted a pathetic thread looking for an approval rating-
let your instructor know that you would like to be taught by someone a little more experienced and professional and higher rank.
dont tell your instructor you think your techniques are better than anybodys..
jesus mcjeremy your gonna make a mcstudent out of this guy.
jeremy, jerk your head back as if i just dope slapped ya!

Classes at my school are run be either the instructor or when he's sick one or two of the more senior students. However, we all tend to try and help each other and correct forms or point out problems. I know this isn't exactly what your talking about but its still worth thinking about. I can sometimes see what someone is doing wrong (usually because I do it also) and will tell the person I'm working with, even if I can't do it right either. I've even done this with some of the students higher in rank than me.
However, if fairly junior students are running classes or are assigned to go around correcting problems and you feel its unwarranted talk to the instuctor like Jeremy said.

If you're senior to them they have no business running your drills and you should talk to the instructor like Jeremy said. If they're pointing things out they've got no business telling you, talk to the instructor. If they're casually pointing things out, let the ego go.
If they're jackasses ignore them.

Ha.ha.ha.ha..Actually Jamoke That last line was pretty funny. However, didn't your mama ever teach you not to interrupt adult conversations?
Anyway Masta, I think you need to talk to the teacher about this. I do agree with Jamoke (oooo that thought makes me shiver) on his point that you should let him know that, being a senior to the Asst., you feel that you would like to be taught by someone with more experience. I still think you should try to find out why he is allowing your Juniors to teach you. It could be to try and instill some leadership or confidence into the student. However you will never know unless you ask.

I just don't know, I can't figure the guy out. He's a good guy but rather strange. What makes it worse is the fact that these assigned asst's really act like jerks toward the newer people. They think there in the army or something. What kills me is that nobody seems to notice these things but me. So, I just keep it to myself or let it out here at mcdojo.com

sounds like you need to visit some other schools- if they higher ranks are looking down at newbies, that is not the place for anyone- you should without a doubt get out of there because telling the lead instructor will only make things worse

Jamoke - you may be right. I'll think about it.

If the Asst.'s are acting like jerks to the newbies, then enact your powers as their senior and take them to the side and talk to them and let them know. Ok...brace yourself Jamoke, I'm about to agree with you again. You should start looking into some other schools...IF you don't get the results you are looking for with your current instructor.

Yeah, as Jamoke says, other schools might prove better for you. However, starting over you'll again be in the position that people senior to you are people that you could nonetheless defeat. Its the way it is anytime you restart somewhere.

It's even worse when it's a GIRL who critises you. You know they have little or know power and can't fight their way out of a paper bag.

ok, i might be about to make myself unpopular here, but there is nothing at all wrong from learning from a woman. their being weaker doesn't mean they are less technical and have nothing to offer.

Does your teacher consider you the senior, or them? Why? Also, exactly what is there about technique that a woman(that's an adult girl) can't do?
