That’s not really what it says. What it says is that punches are too fast for consumer-grade camera-based motion capture systems—because consumer-grade cameras typically capture only 30 FPS. (Note that the accelerometer system in the Wiimote, for all its other problems, appears to have no trouble with temporal resolution.) Real motion capture labs (like this one) also use cameras, but cameras that record at higher resolutions (in the above example, 120 Hz rather than merely 30). For reference, movies traditionally run at 24 FPS, and I gather TV often runs at 30, so 30 FPS for consumer-grade cameras is pretty reasonable.
Presumably, the researchers have to battle financial constraints in that if their system is ever to be useful to anyone, it must not be too expensive for their target demographic to purchase. I’m sure that “motion recognizing systems of today” are eminently capable of picking up punches, but maybe not motion capture systems that can be marketed for mild at-home exercise at a price range that appeals to “poorer middle-aged men living in the North East”…[ petterhaggholm.net | blog | essays ]
