I understand that there are reasons for not allowing this, but you'd think staff at the battalion or brigade level would be able to come up with an approved list that makes sense. People spend retarded sums of money on highspeed boots that will fall apart within one deployment, whereas I expect my Asolo Power Matics to outlive my military career.

One addendum: The Danner mountain boots that were issued at the last couple RFIs for PAX deploying to OEF were well constructed out of cheap materials. Right idea, wrong materials. Soooo close.

I don't know about you guys in the 'states, but our issue kit/clothing up here generally sucks (although, admittedly it's getting better).

Do you guys have anything like Mountain Equipment Co-Op down there or anything like that?

I have no idea what that is, but I have a civilian clothing allowance, so I just buy whatever the **** boots I want.

    http://www.mec.ca/Main/home.jsp

Mountain Equipment Co-Op (MEC) is an outdoor clothing outfitter type place. The cool thing about this place is that you can get other kinds of kit that's way beyond what the 'Government Issue' has for quality, like socks, moisture wicking undergarments/polypro stuff, hydration systems, etc.

A lot of troops up here, especially in the infantry, get a membership at MEC to get these things. Many of our Senior NCOs up here are pretty max-relax about using non issue kit, so long as it's functional and doesn't look excessively stupid.

Was wondering if you had anything like that down there...

Wrong kind of tread for hiking up a mountain. You're going to trip. A lot. Also, make sure to stash an extra pair of socks on the outside of your ruck sack, or in a cargo pocket.
