Every class we punch and kick each other without wearing protective gear, and learn to absorb and shed the power of the strike. There’s some guys you can hit as hard as you can. TKD seems to focus on some weak kicks, and anyone who isn’t afraid of getting hit by them can probably walk all over an average TKD person (I’ve definitely seen hard TKD kicks, but mostly in the form of side/back/front kicks to the body, which is the primary area a systema person develops defenses against). There’s also time spent every class doing some kind of drills where you disbalance your partner and put them on the ground somehow, and this becomes easier when they’re on one foot. These things coupled together can create a problem for a TKD person. That doesn’t make it better, and it definitely doesn’t make it the best thing out there.
What TKD place do you train at, OP?
