Systema: Personal Opinion

Hey all, I'm new to the forum and was fascinated by all the Systema (Russian Martial Art) discussions the other members started. That's why I would like to add my own personal opinion about Systema.

My martial art background is in TaekWonDo, however I have one friend who is currently learning Systema. I just found out recently and didn't ask him about where he trained but he and I did meet up so I can see what Systema is all about.

At first I thought it was a joke. Breathing constantly to make resist pain? taking in the enemy's flow to nullify the damage dealt by an opponent? I mean common people this is like theoretical at best. Also, my friend's striking motion and forms were just unbelievably weak and odd. The only positive thing about his striking was that it was unpredictable.

However, as the time passed by and we ended our little sparring match, I was ashamed by the fact that I wasn't able to kick his ass. His little "flow of body's energy" and "Maximum relaxation" has actually worked during our little match.

Now, I'm not saying that I couldn't even touch him or anything like that. What I'm saying is, my kicks that connected with my friend's body or legs just didn't feel right. It was like hitting a hard rock then feeling jelly inside.

In conclusion, that match has inspired me to take up on Systema training. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to work at the Systema HQ in Toronto.

Maybe if you werent a weepy ***** you could have kicked his ass. This says more about you than systema.

Could it be your TKD training wasn't very good and you weren't able to keep him back much? Just saying "I have done TKD and he has done systema" doesn't actually tell me an awful lot, I think other bullies would agree.

Also isn't it jumping to conclusions a little quickly just basing it on one sparring match?

TKD kicks unable to stop/damage an opponent: Not surprising. What the opponent does may not matter much.

Muay Thai kicks unable to stop/damage an opponent: That would be surprising. It might then be interesting to know what he did to resist them.
