Neil Melanson ?
When he gave Randy his black belt in BJJ? after the James Toney fight i thought it was a weak publicity thing and sucked, I thought the same of Rashads award in his hotel room before his fight too.
Id never heard the name Neil Melanson before so I thought id google it and see who gave him his BB, i couldnt find it, does anybody know? I think he mentioned Karo but is he not Judo?
Im not sure from what i have read.
His wiki (ya i know) states that he spent five years as a Special Agent for the Federal Air Marshals, not sure what that is either can somebody clarify if that is special forces or not?
I couldnt find any competition history for him either?
Not to say he isnt all he says he is, i just would have expected much more on a guy who is the head BJJ Coach at somewhere so high profile as Xtreme Couture.
He isn't the BJJ coach technically. He is the grappling coach *they call it jiu-jitsu but i think that is because of the high exposure of the term) and he gave Randy a black belt in his style, not BJJ. He trained with Karo, Gokor and Gene Lebell. He has an autoimmune condition that has affected his sight so he can't compete.
Didnt Randy say it was BJJ blackbelt on ESPN? or it was said to be a BJJ blackbelt and he acknowledged it , cant quite remember.
I'm pretty sure the black belt is in Neil Melanson's system, not BJJ.
From the article:"I worked on that triangle for over a year,” said Couture, 19-10, of the finishing move, one that led him to receive his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by Neil Melanson in the Octagon after the bout. “A lot of credit to James for stepping up.”
I dont know if it was reported by anyone else other than UFC.com. I feel like they are the lowest form of journalism anyway.

On ****-O-Pedia, it is stated as a BJJ Black belt (see Randy Couture's page).

I'm hoping that it is in his personal system, not strictly BJJ and that he didn't get a BJJ black belt for an arm triangle that took a couple tries...on someone with absolutely zero idea of what he was doing.
This isn't quite as irritating as Rashad Evans getting a BJJ black belt though...that just pissed me off.
