Clinch is a devoted range in Dog Brothers Martial Arts. I'll write more after the Gathering (this Sunday) provided I don't have a broken hand/fingers. Just skimmed this thread, Ryno's got some good advice, as usual.

That would be great, Poi. Our group just went up to Vancouver where Loki (Tricky Dog) and his guys covered some of the material, and it was pretty cool. It just made a lot of sense to me, and it wasn't a big stretch from what I do in SAMBO anyway.

Yes, tell us your thoughts on the Op. If you can post a clip or 2 from the gathering.

They don't allow video of the fights there (except for their video guys). I'll be there too, so it'll be neat to get 2 perspectives of how things went down.

I figured they might not allow video. Is it because they sell the vids?

They sell at least one Gathering DVD, but they don't sell individual ones for each gathering. In their instructional DVDs, they find examples of whatever they're talking about in fight videos, so they're a good source for that too (I wish other MA instructionals took this approach). I'm not exactly sure why they don't allow videos, but I'm fine with it.

It's pretty much standard that instructors don't allow video at seminars - just a bad idea to let video of your instruction be put into someone else's hands, if seminar instruction is income to you.

I had an interesting stick clinch exchange there yesterday. I was fighting a short, quick Filipino guy and someone mentioned that he can throw good kicks from the inside because he’s fast and short. We ended up in a standing stalemate, and he went to kick (don’t remember what kind) and I scooped up his foot and put him on the ground. From there, he somehow managed to position himself to stab me in the groin with a training knife he pulled out while I was fumbling to get mine.

Sounds like a fun one. I kind of enjoy those spontaneously chaotic sparring matches. Now, if only you'd nailed the calf slicer immediately after the leg pick... ;)
