You know how when you're in the clinch, you'll be fencing/swimming/pummeling for underhooks? The grapevine is a lot like that, except your fencing to get your legs in position for the bridge and roll. You, as the mountee, want one leg outside of theirs to keep them from basing out, and one leg inside to push off of for your bridge.
