    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Sherlock Holmes and Bartitsu

Hosted by the Bartitsu Society website, this new, illustrated three-part article reveals that Sherlock Holmes himself was instrumental in the creation of Bartitsu.

Strongly recommended reading for all Holmes fans/martial artists ...

(Yes, that is a picture of Bartitsu founder E.W. Barton-Wright standing next to Sherlock Holmes. Make of it what you will.)

Well, given that Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character devised by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I would say the only thing I could make of that claim is comlete and utter tripe, 100% grade A bullshit if you will

Yeah I'm a little confused about this. If a fictional character was a big part in the creation of this style...wouldn't it then be fictional itself? and if a fictional character helped create a fictional martial art then isn't this thread fictional?

You have giving me much to think on.

Not to be implied however, is my opinion on bartitsu itself..... as the amount of knowlege I have on the subject could barely fill a thimble I would hardly care to pass judgement at all.

More interesting I would speculate is any involvement in Bartitsu of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, wether he had been involved or merely drew upon a interesting source to flesh out a character....

    That picture is laughably photoshopped.

That being said, Bartitsu would be fun simply because the website would have me believe that it is impossible to practice it without a handlebar moustache and a pocketwatch.

People do realize that the article is meant to be humorous, right? DdlR does not actually think that Holmes was a real person.

Anyway, given the origin stories of some CMAs, this is fucking tame.

Wikipedia offers an accurate summary of Bartitsu, including the Conan Doyle connection: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartitsu .

People have tried, but it's always turned out badly.
