Old 1980's ers Soviet Sambo films!

These are not short, so you will need some time to sit and watch them

This one deals with throws only

This one also deals mainly with throws

Interesting seeing that. Actually seeing the mats and the shoes bring to life some of the things I've read about the divergent development of Judo and Sambo. For example, it's not really practical to learn good footsweeps and they do seem to necessitate a heavier, more static style. A guy who just joined my Judo dojo came up through the Ukranian Judo/Sambo system in the late 80s/early 90s and he's very much like that -- big, powerful over the back upper body techniques but limited and unsubtle ashi waza.

This is an awesome find THANKS STEVE! I have only made it through the first vid so far, but the stuff at the 12 min mark is my bread and butter stuff, and I really like some of the variations here.

    @ Res
Actually, the shoes and mats in sambo are quite slick when combined. It does not look it unless you get on the mat. The shoes have a leather bottom and slip very nicely for foot sweeps. Many of the big muscular type throws come from the various wrestling styles from the Soviet regions.

    @ Zapruder
The coach on the mat is Chumakov, who is legendary. He wrote the famous "100 Lessons of Sambo".

    @ Lindz
Yes, I was really going to town click all the subsequent links!

I like the fact that they felt the need to throw in a Benny Hill style montage.

    Without all the breasts :(

Seriously though, I find the B/W film interesting. Looks much older than it really is.
