Short or long depends on distance, and timing. Notice the angling off and back by both. Effective speed depends on proper footwork.

Quick footwork allows the hands to be even faster. Notice the brother is constantly trying to advance, and flank the sister's position. Sister meanwhile, counters his attacks, and continues to try to cut him off, and corner him.

btw - that's how they spar. . .no extra protection, full speed. If you think they don't make contact, you should see their hands and arms afterward!

Do they aim for each others' heads?

Yeah, I could've sworn that they were hitting each other during that clip. I don't think they were aiming to split skulls, though.

I also believe that single stick footwork is a lot different and allows for a lot more angling, which the OP was playing around with.

There were places in this example vid that the brother attacks the high-line in an effort to use the daga to the middle. Sister picks up the high, cut off the travel, and counters the daga. But, no. . .not trying to kill each other (at that time-lol).

I agree. However, many (FMA'ers) do not know what to do with their empty hand, other than parry and tap. Thus much of the footwork can become one-sided. Being able to attack with both hands, and both ends of the stick (side, too!) is necessary to being able to fight without them (sticks).

I'm pretty sure that if you ALREADY have a basis in unarmed combat and you get exposed to FMA footwork, you'll be able to apply it pretty well, depending on how exposed you are to actual sparring. The OP's video starts off on a good foot, but considering this is entering on new territory, he's got some kinks to work out.

I'd be happy to see him apply some more footwork vids in the future, though.
