Style: Does exercise count?--
I usually try my best to not throw the baby out with the bathwater, but upon watching the video of that Zen Do blackbelt grading I actually laughed aloud thinking it was a joke until it kept going. It really seems to be an exercise in using poor body mechanics for damn near everything.
If you intend to get involved with a combat sport, or a martial arts class with an emphasis on fighting, I would urge you to quit ASAP because you WILL be making bad habits that will need to be fixed.
I have no problem with people who'd like to do something which looks kind of like fighting for fitness or cultural reasons, but don't delude yourself. -

Why focus on private lessons? Better to do group classes so you get to spar with different people, learn how to adjust for different body types and strategies. In particular, if you look for a new place specifically because you want to add sparring, surely you don’t just want to spar with the instructor?
Concorde fallacyI have paid quite abit for kits at this place so its hard for me to quit now.
That’s fine, obviously. On the plus its good for my flexability and so fourth.[ petterhaggholm.net | blog | essays ]

No resistance, sloppy kick techniques with no balance, very sloppy punch techniques with letting the hands down.
Sorry to say, but that wasn't a Black Belt/Black Sash test.
This is one:

Leave that club, you will only learn bad habits that you will have to de-learn when you join another club...or you can stay there, be happy with (bad) cardio-kickboxing, but don't be delusional: you will not have learned how to fight or defend yourself.
BTW:
Zen has got nothing to do with harmony, spirituality and other flowerpower bullshit.
Zen as in Zendo means that you will have to develop a state of mind where you will face an adversary knowing that you will be getting beaten up, yet that will not discourage you.
It's about getting back up to your feet 10 times when you were beaten down 9 times.
That is Zen and that is what the the clip that I posted is all about.
PS: a real Kick Boxing gym doesn't give a **** about what is printed on your gloves or shoes. It will wither off with time and lots of contact.

It depends a lot on how they're done, some people bench more with triceps or anterior deltoid. I keep forgetting which form does which. Something about whether the elbows are in/down or out/up and if you use a barbell, whether or not you're trying to crush the bar and bring your hands together (pecs) or rip it apart and bring your hands apart (triceps) that alters muscle recruitment.
'Too much' is a relative concept though, as it depends on how well you can use your chest during a fight, or if you dislike having a chest, or you're worried about it being out of balance with your back or something like that. -
