Is that knee grab legal in the US? I've used that throw before and got a warning for it.

It all boils down to the sanctioning organization more than a "USA" thing.... Some sanctioning organizations follow Thai standards (or at least ATTEMPT to), while others base their rules off of Boxing & Full Contact criteria...

The unfortunate thing to me about those knee counter throws is I rarely encounter people that actually throw knees like that...

I was curious about that... I don't see many people throw those "slapping" knees. Are they just way more common in Thailand, or what?

The slapping knees are for practice. The fight analog would be a curve knee.

By "those types of knees" I mean knees where your back is straight and you're in a basically neutral clinching position. Everyone I've fought, except one girl, either only threw knees from the double neck tie or threw knees to the thigh and went for around the waist clinch. I think these takedowns require a bit higher level of clinching (from your opponent) than is common in these here parts.

I've only seen a few of those 'knee throws' in competition over here, they always go down a storm, usually when one fighters seriously outclassing the other or both are gassed in the clinch and one switches on enough to pull the throw off.

Here is another way to throw/off balance someone when they put their shin up to block your knee or movement forward.
