Heading to Korea for a year, interested in studying Gongkwon Yusul. I was wondering if anyone here who practices the art could give me some insight.

I never heard of that one. I was in Korea for a year back in the '80s and took Hapkido. If I had to do it over again I would take Yudo. If you know where you're going to be stationed you can reach out to whoever is running the rec center and find out what's availible. Thanks for your service.
I feel like you eyeballin' me, dawg!

Gongkwon is the Korean answer to MMA.
Think San Da with Hapkido, but it is supposed to be more alive.

No personal experience, but I've been subscribed to their channel for awhile now. Classes in the honbu (?) school look fantastic; I'd try training there if I were in the area for sure.
I wonder how much Hapkido is really being taught outside of the wristlocky police-ish stuff they occasionally seem to drill, because the striking looks like straight Kyokushin to me, but it looks like a good program regardless.

Give it a try... Any martial art is worth trying... Well most at least. Have fun
