A quick 2cents. I served in the army reserves in the US, not in any combat zones, and I'm currently out, but I seem to remember that we had classes on following the rules of the Geneva Convention. In those classes, it was clear that the rules applied first and foremost to the soldier, meaning that it didn't really matter who the enemy was. You don't get to desecrate corpses no matter the reason (however valid). If you do, you may be disciplined.
Do we know the extent of the punishment the Ghorka soldier received? I don't know if UK standards and punishments are different than our own for infractions against the GC, I'm just curious.
Why would a picture not be a suitable substitute? It would probaly be easier to id a pic of a recentally dead person than the body of a long dead one.
