Pissing off The Lorax- the art of punching trees

So... has anyone here had tree-punching and the like incorporated into their training? How long were you training before you started that? I'm guessing one needs to toughen one's knuckles up a bit before attempting something like this. Is it just something cool-looking, or does it serve a special purpose? I mean, it's a hard wooden surface with rough bark... is the possible scarring what's desirable? Is this something that is truly a useful thing to practice?
Do non-Kyokushin people do this kind of thing? Or is it just us, because Mas Oyama was a little uh... full of fervor.

Sensei and I are on a trip up to Washington state, and I am going to really miss my bag work. I want to punch things. Things other than sensei, who punches back, and sometimes that's just not what I'm looking for. Buhhh why do I post on ambien.

Anyway I said "well, I guess I could just run around and punch trees like Oyama."

But that got me wondering how many people actually do this, even in Kyokyshin, and what they got out of it.

    Oh Jesus Christ, no.

Don't do that. Punching something without any give will destroy your knuckles pretty quick.

Look up one of the body hardening threads. One of them was huge! General consensus was that bag work and weight lifting pretty much do the same thing without crippling you.

    This.

There are iron fist training programs out there but for the love of all that is holy, please don't go attacking trees. Start with a a small shrub of some kind :)

Haha, yeah... I love my punching bag, and I do not love the idea of horrible arthritis. So I think I'm going to just not do that. :p

You could hang your heavy bag from a tree.

Best of both worlds and **** like that, eh?

Plus, if you attack the wrong tree and end up punching an Ent, it's going to be pretty pissed off and likely crush you like jelly. Just something to keep in mind.

Punch a tree? And have every damn environmentalist nut job ready to flag and crucify you?

Jesus just the thought of it....
