I've sparred with the staff. It's fun. Your knuckles take a beating though.

Spar full contact and often against multiple opponents at LEAST once a week.

Mantis, while there is definate difference between an edged weapon and a non edged weapon, the idea that you have to be just blindly hacking in order for one to benefit from the other is rather silly.

Quite frankly, if anything other than hacking with a sword was incapable of doing anything with edgless items then there wouldn't be near the bruises and welts from sparring with wasters and schlagers.

You don't make cutting movements with a baton do you?

Somewhat, yes. The motion of a draw cut doesn't take much away from the force, in the case of the baton as opposed to deepening the cut it's more of recovering as it strikes. Baton's also do well with the equivalent of a rapier tip cut. cept it's a blunt object smacking said target, stead of a thin blade slicing. And, as has been mentioned, not all sword styles revolve around the draw cut.

I like that you mentioned iai in conjunction with the baton. The iaijutsu of Shinden Fudo ryu is shown as a component in the jujutsu. I think the principles are very applicable for learning how to deploy the weapon (or a firearm for that matter) in a empty-handed infighting situation.

Once it's out though I would tend to look more for hanbojutsu with a baton than sword-work, especially you are working in a security position where you can't really hit people noticably. Stick grappling/restraining techs are necessary in that kind of situation.

Since my primary style is a weapon style that's most of what we do. I also hit the gun range at least once a week, more now that I'm trying to teach my girlfriend to shoot.

(And the damn wench keeps showing me up. I intend to accuse her of beginner's luck right up until intermediate level.)
