    Fitness for judo

I'm taking a long forced break from basically all martial arts (busted ACL). But I can still do PT.

What should I work on so that when I go back to judo I'll be able to last a whole class without feeling like I'm about to die?

I also want to get big and sexy (lol) so I want to do some kind of strength training as well.

Go swim. It will help the rehab and get you in shape.
Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.

Just a note about that: I'm a swimming spazz who only ever learned to do the breaststroke, not the front crawl (Australian crawl, whatever). I've also had an ACL tear and surgery and found that the frog-legged movement of breaststroke actually aggravates my knee and causes it to swell.

No question that swimming is superb rehab, but stick to the flipper-style kicks of the crawl. Your physio will presumably have some pool-specific exercises for you. Mine did.

Should I swim continuously or do more of an interval style where I do a length catch my breath and repeat?

Also, swim + stronglifts for the win?

Dunno. Breast stroke is teh win once your knee recovers though. Also, I'm preeetttty sure it's called freestyle (I swam competitively in high school (which was only about three years ago)), this crawl stroke of yours.

Technically freestyle means any of the unregulated strokes, including but not limited to front (or australian) crawl.

Dingdong I have the same problem with breast stroke. Luckily I was born in Australia and being able to aussie crawl fast enough to escape an attacking salty was part of the kindergarten entrance exam.

But seriously can I expect problems mixing swimming with strength training? I find it leaves me more sore for longer than most other cardio activities.

I'm not very well informed regarding swimming, but isn't Freestyle just kind of "choose whatever form you want and try to get first", and Crawl or wossname just happens to be the fastest form?

    Regards,
