    Hell yeah! Hell no!

should i take a break from grappling if i get a tatoo?

I am getting a tattoo for my 18th B-day and is wondering if a tattoo would make me more vulnerable to infections like staph.

Would probably help if you said WHERE you were getting the tattoo, along with what size and what sort of grappling you're talking about.

I'd let it heal for two weeks. A couple of years ago I had a tattoo done on my shoulder and trained a week later in TKD, when I took my dobok off it had scraped away the scab just from moving about. I wasn't even grappling. I suppose if you bandaged it up it wouldn't scrape, but around that time you should be letting the tatt get some air.

Not only infections ( treat any and all fresh tattoos as an open wound )but you are liable to **** up the art itself.

So yeah wait at least 7 days before you even think about rubbing anything on it except A & D ointment. Which should be applied liberally after you wash it ( your hands first of course) three times a day with gentle light circular motions.

For the first several days, a tattoo is essentially an open wound with ink in it. Bad idea to grapple on. And yes, you might mangle the piece itself- your artist will(should, anyway) tell you how to take care of it, which generally involves advice like "Clean it, keep it moisturized, and otherwise don't freaking touch it." Peeling it before it's ready is going to make it look bad once it heals.
