Pretty awesome workout earlier tonight.
So my Judo has been at a plateau for a long time. A solid three or four months where it felt like I was making little to no progress, and as my sparring partners grew and adapted and learned my tricks, I was throwing them less and less and getting thrown more and more.
This put me in a very defensive mode, where I would primarily try to counterthrow or go for low-risk attacks (principally de ashi harai and similar footsweeps). I managed to get pretty good at picking people's feet off the ground, less so at off-balancing them enough to actually throw. Pretty frustrating.
Now, the highest percentage amongst my throws is what scientists believe to be Uki Waza. It might actually be some kind of funky yoko otoshi, but I'm pretty sure it properly qualifies as uki waza. Pretty much this thing from a tournament I did back in the winter.
Anyways, I had a SaGa Frontier-moment today at practice when I realized how to use said De Ashi Harai to setup said Uki Waza. The result involved me managing to throw a competetive blackbelt who usually wipes the floor with me (twice), and launching another guy higher than I've ever launched anyone in my fighting career to date. And those of you who've attended throwdowns with me know that I've tossed some people in my day.
I also managed to tap someone with a jigoku jime/crucifix choke/bow and arrow choke, another technique which I've classically been good at entering with and poor at finishing.
Breaking plateaus is an awesome feeling, especially one's that have been going on as long as this. I feel like I've just received a gift from Apollo, a divine revelation on how to make men fly.
The fool thinks himself immortal,
If he hold back from battle;
But old age will grant him no truce,
Even if spears spare him.

I love it when I break plateaus!! Everything becomes so much clearer and I feel that there is some hope for me after all.
Then next week comes around...
Feel good about yourself and keep working!!

Cool. How long have you been doing judo, total? Curious about if/when I'll plateau myself, I've just started.

Oh, you will plateau, noobie. You will plateau until it hurts your soul. Just keep training.
