Seriously, every metal band needs bagpipes. Between those, the hurdy-gurdy, the fact that half their lyrics are in Gaulish, Eluveitie has it goin' on.
Thanks for this, I really liked it.

As for metal... I'm always hesitant to say I'm into metal. You can bag on me all you like for my tastes, but I think the music I listen to (Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Mudvayne and I recently got into The Used) just doesn't have the raw, harsh quality that I think appeals to proper metal lovers.

That said, when people ask what kind of music I like and I know they listen to Pop, country or whatever, I'll say metal, because that's what they'd think it was and it's too much fucking effort to describe all the time.

Disturbed counts as a great metal band in my book. That Dan Donegan is a Man-Beast.

Also. Amon Amarth is pretty good, that other **** you mention is ****, Pilgrim. (Note that I typed the word "pilgrim" whilst imagining a John Wayne accent)

Metal is a very diverse genre, and the "harsh quality" is more or less present depending on where you sit within that spectrum. Compare, for example, these two Finnish metal bands:
    Ensiferum:

    And Epiclore:

I'm a big fan of both groups (Epiclore also gets megapoints for putting their entire discography up for free download on their website), but they give very different vibes.

    @Pilgrim:

Amon Amarth and Papa Roach - I've not heard much of them, so I'll give them some more ear-time (heh) before I make up my mind.

I like In Flames (enough to have bought most every album they've released - I like showing my support to artists by buying their stuff, especially local artists) - they're the band that rekindled my interest in the heavier forms of metal.

Kinda fun seeing how they've changed up through the years (amongst other things they do a very nice cover of Depeche Mode's "Everything Counts" on their 1997 album Whoracle). The later albums have a more defined melodic strain, and Anders Fridén, the vocalist, starts to move away from the classic death metal growling. I prefer these albums.

    Regards,
    Lars

It's pretty much just standard fare German Power Metal, but I have been really digging Stormwarrior the past couple days:

    *metal salute to McClaw*

This thing about bagpipes, fiddles and other ancient instuments in metal shows the vitality of the genre.

Another fine example, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter

YouTube- Die Apokalyptischen Reiter Riders on the Storm

    Germans do it best.

@ OP: of all the metallica songs in the entire universe, you pick one from the St Anger album to start a metal-thread? What was that about? Why not pick Battery or The unforgiven or any other fuckin' metallica song for that matter. St Anger is the worst example of metal this side of Bullet for my valentine.

Now for some actual metal, here's VADER coming your way: http://www.youtube.com/v/o6ifAAhPVOQ...en_US&fs=1

and I think Amon Amarth is great too btw.
