I'm going to make an obligatory mention of Children of Bodom since we're talking about Norway/Finland/Sweden now.

I like some of their stuff, but it suffers from too much "This works so keep doing it the same way."

edit: Mayhem's church burnings and murders and the brain fragment necklaces are pretty good black metal stories. Here's another one.

Gaahl, leader singer of Gorgoroth spent a couple years in jail for assault because he kidnapped some guy and cut him with a knife, caught the blood in a cup and made the victim drink it.

    Hilarious, eh?

The major difference between black metal fanatics and emo kids is that the black metal guys are actually fucking crazy and will do the **** the say. Still, they're both MAJOR retards.

Never understood the goth and goth offshoot subcultures, nor will I ever support it. They always seemed to be the most insecure individuals, all the while trying to make it known they didn't care what people thought. As it is now cool to have mental issues because of them, I wonder what the really traumatised kids are now wearing.

Remember parents. Don't hug your kids, beat your kids.

First off, goth =/= metal, and don't you forget it.
The most succinct explanation of goth culture I've ever heard came from Voltaire (The musician, not the writer):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf8EeyAB8fA
And honestly, in my experience, goth culture nowadays is more about the aesthetics than anything else.
    /[derail]

We now return you to your regularly scheduled metal, with some ball-crushingly awesome music from Sabaton:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhKgzQEhvgk
Sabaton writes songs about World War II. Occasionally they write about other wars, but mostly WWII.
The level of specificity they take with their lyrics has really pushed the notion of "find of a schtick and stick with it." This is a band that, after releasing the song Talvisota, still felt that they hadn't fully explored the topic of the 1939 Russian invasion of Finland and released the song White Death on the same topic with their next album.
    The fool thinks himself immortal,
    If he hold back from battle;
But old age will grant him no truce,
    Even if spears spare him.

Lately Blind Guardian have taken the Metallica route (to shittiness). But did I have a blast when I was reading the Silmarillion and they came out with Nightfall in M.E....

At first it sounded a little ridiculous, but then I got the hang of the extreme epicness of the whole thing and I felt very, very escapist for some months.

Also, the acoustic Bard's song is great to shut up people who say "metal is just noise". (yeah that's folk, but still metal, so...)
    YouTube- The Bard`s Song (Studio)

    Other great songs,

    Bright Eyes
    YouTube- Blind Guardian--Bright Eyes
    Mordred's song

    On this drift:
    Amorphis' awesome "My kantele"

    This is calls for....

P.S. The Soulforged, Majesty, Script for My Requiem are my favorites by them, I think. So many good songs.

P.P.S. I linked one of their songs in my "modern" section. If y'all don't know Symphony X, start! They're a prog band that's doing a reverse Metallica (getting heavier as time goes on). Personally I think Damnation Game, Divine Wings of Tragedy, and V were their best albums (and the double live cd was amaaaaazing), but really they haven't put out a bad album. I thought the Odyssey was a little weak, but everyone else seemed to disagree with me. I don't mind them getting heavier, though I think their keyboards are suffering for it, they're not as integral to the music as they used to be.

    Some other good offerings:
YouTube- Symphony X - Dressed to kill
YouTube- Symphony X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy Pt. 1 - Live On The Edge Of Forever
YouTube- The Divine Wings Of Tragedy Pt. 2
YouTube- Fallen - Symphony X with lyrics

    Okay, tender question here:

Amon Amarth: Cool [_] Not Cool [_]

In Flames: Cool [_] Not Cool [_]

Papa Roach: Cool [_] Not Cool [_]

In Flames make my favorite workout noise,
but I found only a few people who think they're hearable.

Just interested in what you guys think about it.
